Is a SSHD worth the extra for mass storage?

Turtle8bit

I am setting up a nas for my parents so they can get all those old family photos off there already cramped laptops but i need tons of storage for my games. So should I pay a ton of money for a 4 tb SSHD if those even exists in that capacity or should I save the money and lets say get two 4 tb HHD for the same price? Please help.

The hybrid drives are better for things that you will access frequently. The first few loads of your most used stuff on the drive will be slower (more like a traditional hard drive), but once it "learns" what you use the most, those things will be noticeably faster.

a SSHD is only really good for fast boot times, everything else will be normal speed.

I wouldn't suggest them for family photos or other documents which you'd want to keep forever, as SSHD's are subject to both physical failure like a HDD, as well as the finite read/write limit of an SSD

for family photos and such, go for a couple HDD's in RAID 1, so you can keep them with plenty of confidence.

So maybe both?

Sorry for not understanding (little tired :P), but what exactly do you mean by that?

Do they even sell at those capacities? O_O Personally I'd get a low profile 2.5" sshd for the convenience of portability & it being a mass storage drive with a decent cache lvl. Once sata 3 ssd's drop by 20-30% & m.2 drives are more available at lower prices then sure.

Go with raid optimized drive and for the love of god please don't use bigger than 2TB ones. You will hate it when they die prematurely. Raid 1 all of the drives in a proper NAS solution.
