Oh and the only smart-phones he has owned are HTC's. So I'll ask him if he wants it

I have an LG G3 (AT&T) and been using it for a week. However I rooted it so I don't know how stable the stock UI is. But so far it's an awesome phone. There are a few issues though: the top-most part of the phone gets warm when I play games or when I use it outdoors while the sun is beaming down on it. It's also a bit of a battery hog, which is obvious since it needs to drive a 1440p display. Fortunately it will last a day if you use it regularly.

My vote goes for the one m8. I currently have the m7 on verizon, but I bought the m8 to try out on tmobile's network. Sadly I did not get a signal at my house, but it took everything about the m7 and improved it except for maybe the size. I prefer the 4.7 inch screen over the 5 inch, but that's just me. HTC's Sense is great and more responsive than the g3 model at my work (retail is not fun) and just overall feels easier to use but more capable.

my top phones right now are

1) sony xperia z2

2) htc one m8

3) lg g3

4) moto x

5) oneplus one

the lg g3 has a bigger screen, but worse colors, and it can overheat, and then you can't use it at full brightness. the m8 also has better build quality and speakers (i won't use speakers, but some people do) so the m8 is better imo, and it is what I am getting in a few days. the z2 is my ideal phone, but I can't get it in the united states on contract, so its $600 more than the m8 for me.
