Where to store photos

I have around 5 thousand family photos that I need to organize does anyone have any suggestions on where I should store them

If the whole family wants to access them, I would recommend something like a 2TB Network drive. It's what I got, and anyone in the house can open and access the files.

With only 30GB of free space.... I really doubt he wants to pay a monthly subscription for more space (is it monthly or permanent once you upgrade?)

Personally I would have zero issue fitting 5k photos on 30GB.... My average photo is probably ~1MB. Unless he is using a DSLR or something fancy I doubt it would be an issue.

All depends on his filesizes. My photos surely wouldn't fit.

get a couple of WD blacks and use a RAID 1 config so a HDD failure won't mean losing 5000 family photos

a media server (I like using plex).  You can access them from anywhere, even when outside your LAN if you forward your port.  I put my family photos on my plex server and grant share privs to my families guest login accounts.  They can view them from any device using a web browser.

 

I sync the really important photos to my free dropbox account (I get close to 7GB free).

Sort them, have the ones you really don't want to lose printed out (it's between 10¢ to 20¢ depending on where you go). We recently printed out about 500 pictures and it cost us more or less $50, worth it. Even if you have 5k pictures (we had a bit over 3k), I'm sure there are many that may not look as good, some doubles or just random pictures you don't really care about in there. (My niece had taken 100+ pictures of trees.. seriously, don't care...)

As for the rest of them, either keep them on the computer, on a large capacity SD card or on a network drive for all to have access to. Make backups if they are important memories, cannot stress that one enough. Unlike with something physical, the digital stuff can be gone just from a HDD that suddenly stops working for no reason.
