Overclocking an FX 9590?

Just out of plain curiosity, what kind of cooling and motherboard would you need to be able to overclock a FX 9590 to something like 5.5ghz? Thanks

The stock cooler should do the trick. What I like to do is keep my 9590 buried in snow where it belongs.

You'd need a custom water loop in an air conditioned room. Chilled liquid or Peltier is preferable.

i recommend a crosshair v formula z and preferably a custom loop, but something like an h110 will be fine.

There really is no overclock headroom and the most you'd get out of liquid is probably 5.2 Ghz.

 

They are cherry picked to have such good voltages at high overclocks, so basically just a factory overclocked FX 8350.

Keep in mind that the FX-9590 is already pushing the boundaries of overclocking in regard to the piledriver architecture and many of them won't be stable at anything above the infamous 5ghz mark...also you would have to dump more than the ''safe rated'' 1.5v into the chip to stabilize such an overclock and the CPU will degrade fairly quickly.

As some others mentioned get an FX-8350 instead and dump 1.5v onto it and see how far you can push it, chances are you will be able to get 5ghz out of it on a good motherboard.

Be advised if you're a gamer, even at 5ghz that CPU play games at the level of about a core i5-4460...tested this myself a lot as i owned an FX-8320 that was doing 4.93ghz with 1.52volts.

the CVFZ has an 8+2+2 power delivey system. also, i have had higher overclocks on my formula compared to my ud7

I hate to tell you this but that's not exactly bragging rights. Better off with 4790k honestly, no thermal throttling or core-switching when one half of the module gets too hot.

 

If you shoved the 8350 up to 5.0 GHz you have the bragging rights and you didn't pay for them.

IMHO in regards to gaming even a core i5-4460 has more ''bragging rights''

now for multi-threaded CPU tasks that's another story..

only multi-threaded tasks which use more than 4 threads... Apart from professional software, you almost never see it.
