Just installed Windows8, Any tips?

If you don't have the money right now to buy startisback you can go and download the 30 day trial and buy it when you can

Oh, I see. Thanks : D

If you would like the start button back to give you the old start menu, you may consider buying a program called "Start 8" for $5. http://www.stardock.com/products/start8/

It is much better than the free ones and the modern UI, and totally worth it. :)

I'm also looking into installing Windows 8. I'm currently on Windows 7 and was just wondering if you would recommend it (if you've used Windows 7, that'd be even better). Thanks =D

Going Windows 8 requires you to have an open mind, and ready to have patience and learn something new. If you don't, then don't bother. But you'll be forced too at some point, and the more your wait (at each version of Windows that comes out), the harder it will be as the learning curve increases. Right now, all the people that went and said "XP forever", and now theirs computer doesn't work properly with XP, are totally screwed, and require constant help in getting up to date.

If you don't think you'll have much patience. Perhaps its best to wait for Windows 8.1, where from new collected data from users and proper user feedback will lead to some improvements.

That is my advice.

Alright thanks :D, By the way, do you guys think a touchscreen would improve the WIN8 user experiance? and how much do these thing usually cost, and at what sizes?

You could look into the Leap Motion. Also, you should play around with the Modern UI before paying for a start menu that you won't necessarily need. I find that Modern UI is perfectly fine. Start -> type name of program -> press Enter -- super easy.

i actually don't miss the start menu at all i can launch my programs from the start screen much faster ... i only spend about .75 to 1.5 seconds in the start screen

(1) high frame rate (2) ultra graphics settings (3) cheap...>> choose only two<<...

if it's never been done then i'm probably tryna do it. (((((((Bass so low it HERTZ)))))))

I didn't know how to shut down (besides alt-f4) the computer for a good 4 days after getting windows 8.

create a shortcut via rightclick menu, and enter this "shutdown.exe /s /t 0" without the quotes, u can obvs change the icon but this is now a shutdown shortcut

Just a guy with a beard

Hello LinusTechTips! best forum in teh interwebz!,

So I just installed Windows8 you already know that if you read the title, and I'm just wondering if there's anything I should know, software I should install, settings I should look for and edit? in short: you got any tips for me? :D I already used Ninite.

Buy a copy of startisback, you can get a 5 PC license for $5 and I think a 2 PC license for $3

While Start8/Startisback are both great Start Menu options, I personally recommend Classic Start instead. It's free, and functions similarly. Classic Start is also available on Ninite, which you've already mentioned that you've used. It has a lot of great options, such as choosing which type of Classic Menu you want (Win95/98, XP, Vista/7 styles), as well as custom start button icons.

I would try Classic Start first. If you find it doesn't offer enough or that the additional features of Start8 or Startisback are worth the cost, THEN go ahead and buy them.

For Sale: Meraki Bundle

iPhone Xr 128 GB Product Red - HP Spectre x360 13" (i5 - 8 GB RAM - 256 GB SSD) - HP ZBook 15v G5 15" (i7-8850H - 16 GB RAM - 512 GB SSD - NVIDIA Quadro P600)

Win8 is not as alien and different as people make it out to be IMO, if you have ever used a phone or really any device with a touchscreen, Win8 will feel familiar, even with the mouse.

Also i found that the new UI isn't as terrible as people made it out to be, it's clean, it looks good and it works, is it the most efficient UI ever? No of course it's not, but it works and does what I want it to do.

At least that's how it is to me.
