Test CPU Without Cooler?

Go to solution Solved by Mateyyy,

So, even If in just booting it to see if I get to BIOS?

Yes, your CPU really needs cooling, even if you're not putting any load on it. If you're running it without a cooler, even in the BIOS, after a couple of minutes you will just fry your CPU, particularly if you will keep turning on your PC after the automatic shutdown from overheating.

Hey, I know that Linus always suggests that you test your system out of the case, and for this he often times puts on the stock cooler.  Is it safe to run this basic test without attaching any type of cooler?  I don't have anything to clean it with and would prefer not to buy any.

System:

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i 77.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler
Motherboard: Asus SABERTOOTH Z97 MARK 1 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
Memory: Kingston HyperX Beast 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1866 Memory
Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Case: NZXT Phantom 530 (Black) ATX Full Tower Case
Power Supply: Corsair RM 850W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 8.1 (OEM) (64-bit)

Edit:  GPU:  MSI Geforce GTX 780 Lightning

I haven't thought of a good signature yet.

Put on a cooler, even if it's the stock Intel one included. Don't kill your CPU before you get the chance to properly use it.

I really wish that we'd just make organic hardware already, that grows and adapts to the demands it needs to meet. That way, grannies' computers can be floppy sacks of organicness and the 12 year old Minecrafters will look like the guys that only do bicep curls, and the nerdy programmers will finally have justice, with their body-builder rigs that skipped leg day.

Nope, definitely not ok.

Just throw the stock cooler on there, you can clean off the thermal paste with anything that has alcohol in it, like your mother's nail polish remover or whatever.

Yes.

You can also use the cooler to better-leverage the motherboard into your case, instead of man-handling your motherboard awkwardly.

I noticed that in your listed specs, there is no GPU. Did you not get one, even with an 850w PSU? That's enough for SLI/CF.

Thanks.  Sorry there is a GPU, I just already own it (780 Lightning)

That was bad.

I have issues with puns.

They get in my head and I find myself irritated if I don't apply them, no matter how terrible.

I'm fully aware of the horridness of it :) With your comment, I can't help but want to reply with "...to the bone?  B)"

@lukezon, if you are thinking of cleaning thermal paste and have to get some fancy stuff for it, don't worry. Using isophyr alcohol is just for people who think they are elitists (and @LinusTech isn't helping on this). You don't need it. Just soft paper tower (toilet paper etc) is enough. Alcohol will help if you are cleaning old and dry stuff but with brand new things you are fine with cheaper methods.
