I was finding myself wondering why Google hasn't released Chrome OS to the public yet. Sure, it would take a lot of effort to try and get the drivers for everything compiled and a way to install only the needed ones, but for older computers, I can see Chrome OS being a pretty good choice, if they made it a touch more lightweight. So, what do you think about this? Should Google try and release it to the public? Why or why not?

Them releasing Chrome OS to the public has the possibility to hurt Chromebook sales.

I'd never use it, but I could see it working for a lot of people. We're talking about what's on Chromebooks yes?

I find them way too restrictive. Needing to have an internet connection? Doesn't always work.

I don't think they'd really give two fucks to be honest. They're not a hardware manufacturer.

It's like a sandwich. The bread is merely the vessel for what's within. Just like the OEMs are merely the vessel for Chrome, and Google services.

If they could get people to use it without, they'd gladly d it.

Like @TheSLSAMG said, it might hurt the sales of the Chromebook if ChromeOS were to be available to every platform. Therefore stopping the OS from being an exclusive to Chromebooks.

 

There is Chromium OS, which is open-source, so I suppose someone could fiddle with that to create a similar OS to ChromeOS.

 

But I don't know if it would be much use to anyone.

If they release it to the public they could have it take on the Linux touch with the community helping improve it for system. It would be wise of them to release the OS, provided it gets a large enough following.
