Intel Core i5, Ivy Bridge, and "S". Suitable for gaming?

More pointed towards the S, is a Core i5 3470S enough to game? I think the answer is yes, but I want to be sure. The reason I'm curious? Micro Center has one for $160, and it's a Core i5, so, y'know... I assume Ivy Bridge is fine?

There's also a 4590 for the same price, but supposedly the BIOS for many boards is out of date for it and blahhhhhhh...... I don't want to deal with it.

Also, what exactly does the S mean? Less power consumption and ghz? lol

Yes, definitely

S is simply a underclocked version of the original one, thus using less power\

What GPU are you using though?

The S means it's a low power part, it uses less power, runs much cooler, but doesn't perform as good. Get the i5 4440 at least, it's $10 more, doesn't need bios updates and motherboard support, and it comes with a higher clock, meant to be used on a real gaming rig.
