What memory is needed for home server?

What kind of memory is needed for a home media server? ECC? non-ecc? buffered? un-buffered?

you can have a home server with pc hardware? depends on what you want to do.

normal DDR3 ram will be more then fine, only scientist or finalcial institutions need ECC because a mistaken is not torelated.

Home media as in XMBC or home media as a NAS for files?

 

Home media as in plex and whs 2011 own transcoder and streamer.

Then how much ddr3 ram do I need?

4 works, go with 8. Doubt you'll need 16.

 

Is desktop gaming memory fine?
