should i get another gtx 780 first or 4k display?

farhanorakzai

my birthday is this month, and i can either ask for a gtx 780 (already have one) or a 4k monitor (either asus pb287q or samsung u28d590d) which should i get first. if i get one, i will have to wait a couple of months for the other. i am leaning towards the 4k monitor, but will i be able to play games on it? no anti aliasing and medium-high settings with 1 gtx 780?

get a 780 now, since they wont really drop in price for some time i think, and save up for a 4k monitor, and by the time you have the money, they should be even cheaper than they are now, as they are dropping almost daily now

I would go 780, as one will be crippled if you try to play games. The 4k monitors are also dropping price much faster so I'd wait a bit on that.

Get a 4k display, a single 780 can handle it fine and if you find you want more, THEN you can thing about a second 780 when prices drop. Dual 780 is kind of wasted for anything less than 4k.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

get a 27" 1440p monitor, your 780 will handle it MUCH better

i am using a 1920x1080p monitor right now at 60 hz. i honestly am only looking to get 4k for the pixels, so 1440 does not really appeal to me

1920x1080 = 2073600 pixels
2560x1440 = 3686400

Honestly it is a massive difference!!! you get a much sharper image, better text, larger display and MUCH better game performance

Why get 4k and run your games on medium? when you could run on high or better at 1440p?

For example a single 780 on Metro last light very high only gets 26fps, but gets 49 at 1440p, it only gets 49fps on low settings at 4k

Also no horrible scaling issues

Just something to consider anyway

Get a 2nd 780 now then grab a nice 1440p later. I'm looking at the ASUS ROG SWIFT PG278Q. While a single or even dual 780 setup may handle 4k, it isn't worth it. Not much is optimized for 4k and the displays are still vastly overpriced. I would wait a generation or two before looking at 4k gaming. Right now, the sweet spot is 1440p.

There are no cards in SLI that can literally handle 4K at max settings with 60 fps consistently. The market isn't really ready for 4K. You need about 3-4 cards to be able to get decent frames.

Personally, instead of being an early adopter of 4K I would just go with a 1600p Crossover (2560 x 1600), higher resolution than 1440p and two 780's will easily give you 60fps in modern titles. You will be blown away by the way games look at 1600p.

Not sure how I feel about the 1600p option. I feel like its an odd resolution. You're not gaining much yet you are still taxing your cards a little more. 1440p provides a great pixel density for your average 27in size plus G-SYNC...

Go look at screenshots of games @ 1600p, then let's see how "odd" of a resolution you think it is. 1440p is less pixels than 1600p, so in the end it will not look as good as 1600p monitor would. Plus 1600p monitors come in 30" which is a perfect size for the pixel density. The taxing on the cards is not much compared to 1440p either, but the pixel increase is more than noticeable
