100 mhz overclock makes 3960x overheat

i have an i7 3960x on asus rampage iv extreme cooled with corsair hydro h75. normally, it runs idle at 30ish degrees celcius, and 50ish under load. i tried overclocking it from 3900 mhz boost to 4000 mhz boost and ran realtemp and prime 95, but at 100 percent load, the temperature was 91 degrees. why did it overheat so much? did i do something wrong? i only adjust cpu multiplier not voltage.

that's what prime is made for, to test the Max heat, and you got it OCed

try manually setting the voltage. auto voltage can cause some havoc sometimes.

What's the voltage? (you can see it from cpu-z)

Generally, it's not bad.

Since you didn't mention what voltage you're running at I would assume you used the auto function for your OC which means that it's likely that there is an unnecessary amount of voltage going through your chip, that and the H75 is awful. Try lowering your voltage or lowering your ambient temperature.

Indeed its a sandy chip, which are much more heat resistant, and can handle prime totaly fine.

 

His problem is his cheap AIO cooler. this particular cooler, is just a midrange cooler.

Any 240mm liquid cooler or a big heatsink for air cooling(be quiet! dark rock pro 3,noctua NH-D15)

my budget is about 150. the only thing is that i cant really fit a high profile cooler because i have corsair vengence ram. i have been looking and found this

It looks like a nice kit, but to be honnest i dont have any experiance with it.

 

You could offcourse also grab a H100i with some SP120 silent fans, or Noctua NF-F12´s. will be cheaper probably

i currently own a noctua nf-f12 and an nf-p12. if i put those on the H100i, will i get performance, but at the same time, silence? i am a little weird about that. i hate hearing my computer, and am looking for complete silence.
