8320 Overclock keen-ness?

So at stable my 8320 is able to sit at 4.7Ghz on exactly 1.4v on the core boosted.

However i wanted to note that it's current Idle is 19degrees with 50+ when being used for gaming, i should also note that this is being done on an ASRock 970 Pro 3 R2.0 under a Hyper 212 Evo...with relatively weak power phases.

Would i be brash as to try my hand at getting a 990FX Gigabyte thing....slap a Watercooler on it and see if i can reach 5Ghz or above?

Or am i being really nuts? I get the risks...but right now everything is actually holding really strong....unless someone is going to point out something i don't see right now? VRM seems okay...Mobo isn't getting toasted...might just be drawing alot of power is all.

Recommendations? i am sorta keen to see what might be lurking inside.

You could definitely try. I'm not even sure how you're doing what you're currently doing. That's already some sorcery you have going on.

Hang on, do you mean when the cpu idles it is 19°C? Unless the room where your pc is, is ~10°C or less those temps aren't right. It is impossible for air or watercooling to get the cpu temps lower than the room temps.

with a 4+1 power phase id be very hesitant to overclock beyond 4ghz, infact my 8320 throttled on my m5a78l-m/usb3 and that thing didnt exactly have trouble with a 4ghz phenom2 x4...

4.4ghz over a few years is worth a lot more than 5ghz for 3 minutes then a bluescreen.

It drops down because NZ temps sit about 16degs or lower...34 ambient is our highest...Plus i'm on the 14th floor of an apartment building...so again...lower temps because higher up.

well you can go for it like i did. but not on that board and likely not to be stable (unless you dont care about degredation and have water cooling).

ill be amazed if your cpu is stable at 4ghz on that current board.

If you're simply going to upgrade your motherboard & cooler for an additional 300Mhz then I don't think it's worth it.
However if you're going to be upgrading your motherboard for additional functionality then I'd definitely recommend it.

Your 8320 seems to be a relly good chip, i have my 8320 running at 4.6Ghz on 1.425v with a Noctua NH-C14 cooler, while gaming the temperatures never go over the mid 50s and at said voltage the chip is Prime95 blend & smallFFT stable. I have an Asus Sabertoth R2.0 motherboard which offers fantastic functionality, flexibility & reliability.
I would't recommend a Gigabyte 990FX UD3 board with so many issues with VRMs overheating even on the latest 4.0 revision which was supposed to remedy this issue.

If you want to upgrade for additional functionality & overclocking headroom I'd recommend grabbing the Asus M5A99FX R2.0. You'll get significantly more flexible fan control optons, a more robust UEFI environement and a more intellgent PCIE lane allocation. I do admit that the UD3 from Gigabyte is more aesthetically consistant than the Asus board but I personally believe that it's not worth the risk of getting a board which exhibits the VRM overheating issue which will sigificantly hamper overclocking.

I'll definitely take it into consideration when i look. Functionality and stability is what i am keen on....i'm playing devil's mile on this mobo....but then i do wonder if i happened upon getting good gear by chance.

As for my chip being stable to the other guy...three days now....still going strong.

5GHZ+ on Gigabyte 990FX, naah i think you will get dissapointed there lol

 

If you want extreme overclocks like that then look at.

1. Asus crosshair V Formula Z
2. Asrock 990FX Extreme 9
3. Asus 990FX Sabertooth R2.0

its not considered stable if it throttles under prime, assuming you've even stress tested it.

Buying a new board + cooler (so a minimum of £160 ish) would be kind of pointless for a 300MHz overclock.

 

The board should be OK with your 1.4v as long as you don't stress it all the time. If it seems stable in Prime95 large FFT for a few hours it should be OK.
