Microsoft OneDrive Storage Boost For All

GoodBytes

Today, Microsoft is overhauling its OneDrive storage options with a serious upgrade for all.

onedrivelaunch.0_standard_1020.0.jpg

Free users passes from 7GB to 15GB of storage.

Office 365 subscribers passes from 20GB to 1TB

Office 365 Home subscribers passes from 20GB per user to 1TB per user (a 9.99$ per month service).

Office 365 Personal subscribers passes from 20GB to 1TB. (a $6.99 per month service)

For paid plan for additional storage:

-> 100GB is now $1.99 a month (previously $7.49)

-> 200GB is now $3.99 a month (previously $11.49)

If you need 1TB of cloud storage, clearly the Office 365 Personal is the best option. Not only you get your 1TB of stage, but you also have full Office 2013 for your system.

If you are a current user of OneDrive paid or not, you are automatically upgraded to the larger storage.

I guess it pays off being with them for so long. I've been a member for 3 or so years now. Normally I have 25GB (free), but for being a member for so long I have an extra 20GB for a year, with a 3GB Camera Roll perma-bonus. 48GB of greatness.

Wow that's a big jump

Yea. Microsoft is really getting aggressive. Especially that OneDrive has Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote all online as well, so that the formatting of document won't be trashed if you don't have Office, that is pretty amazing.

It is free, that is what I am saying!

It is online, and works with any modern web browser, be it: Chrome, Firefox, IE, or even Safari (if you are desperate).

Google Drive compresses image, reduces colors, breaks formatting...

OneDrive also has multiple user sharing (http://office.microsoft.com/en-ca/office-online-help/work-together-on-office-documents-in-onedrive-HA102625039.aspx), and if you want to edit a document in full office that you have offline installed on your computer, you don't need to download it, open it, when done, save, and upload. Nope. From a click of a button, it will open your offline software, and as you save, it syncs online.

Microsoft is very very aggressive. Good for us!

More storage is always good. I don't see any mention of people who bought the indefinite licenses of office though... Whats that about?

I just checked as of now I still have 7 GB. Then again considering I use it solely for creating and storing Word files I don't really have a right to complain.

I already have 25GB for free (plus 3GB camera bonus) and yet I don't use it. Firstly because I don't trust Microsoft that much, but also because I got 68.4GB on Dropbox for free.

I am not a fan of subscriptions either so even though their prices are now much better, I still won't subscribe to them.

Sorry Microsoft but this isn't enough to win me over. I might throw some photos into an encrypted container and upload that to OneDrive, but that's it.

If you bought Office 2013, you have no OneDrive extra space. You have it only if you have the Office 365 subscription.

If you don't trust the provider, how about OwnCloud (its free)? You set up your own cloud at home, and you have software to sync, and it works with smartphones as well.

I have yet to tried it, but it looks interesting . http://owncloud.org/

Well I already got HTTPS and SFTP running on my NAS (as well as a VPN I can connect to on my router) so I don't really need more ways to send files from my home somewhere.

These cloud services are good for off-site backups, collaborations on stuff like projects and sending files to my friends (like images and such). I've started to lose respect for Dropbox as well because of their stupid moves (bad changes to the ToS, hiring former NCA employees etc). At least Dropbox won't suspend your account if you upload porn, so it's the lesser of two evils if you ask me.

That's a lot of storage. Dropbox really needs to pull their finger out now.

I always thought of using a commercial server better because I am not relying on the speed of my home network when I needed to access my files on the go, which could be on the other side of the world. I would think that something being stored on OneDrive or Google Drive is more readily available compared to a local home server? Just want to see if this is the correct thinking.

Yes that is true and a good way of thinking.

I recently upgraded to 100Mbps upload speed though so for me that doesn't matter, but for a lot of people it is far better to download something off OneDrive/Dropbox/Google Drive compared to their home network connection.
