It's official!

"For the first time ever, a North American university is officially adding League of Legends to its athletic program and building a varsity team to compete in next year’s North American Collegiate Championship."

It's official there will be a league of legends team as an athletic team like any other sport. I think this a real statement to the world, with league of legends being considered a real sport by the US government and now it being a collegiate level sport that gaming is a real career. As well that the gaming industry is doing well and more and more job opportunities can come with this growth in the industry.

Fair enough, a Counter-Strike team would be cool. But atleast League of Legends is a start.

This is entirely stupid. Seriously?

Maybe, but it begs a real question. Would you be a jock if you played on this team? Kappa

This is simply not an athletic team...

It makes me wonder, if this catches on and more schools do this will kids spend countless hours playing games and being able to justify it to their parents as trying to get a scholarship? I feel people neglect their studies enough as is.

How so? I prefer DotA2 for a moba and CS is an old time favorite that you cannot disregard. Sure League is more popular than CSGO and possibly DotA2 but that doesn't make it a better game.

Enjoy those tacos now, for in 1000 years they will be illegal... eh Ha Ha Ha! I think we all know why.

I think this is a huge issue. At least here in where I live (Singapore) we have such things called "CCA" co-curricular activities where after standard school hours, students would participate in such activities. The system is heavily ingrained with the focus still being studying, if there is any small indication of when the student participating in CCA is starting to drop their grades, then they would be approached to drop the CCA, if they refuse then they would be removed. I guess this works because majority of students here actually want to study, not sure how a system like this would work with students who wont want to study and with such a popular and time demanding thing such as esports.

What?

snip

I mean, I get making a team as a after school thing. But a varsity team that will be considered a real sport? I think while it's a good step in the right direction if they mess it up it'll put esports even farther behind then it is. If the students start doing poorly in class or not attending because they were up late playing a game. I feel there are a lot of risks involved when making it this real.

I give more credit to people that do something with their bodies rather than their hands.

As E-sports gain popularity and gets bigger many people will be able to make a decent living out of playing games. Not saying everyone will, but I hope it does continue to grow.
