Ya but I heard the layout is horrible with the quick corners so it always brings you to the start menu with it only touching for a millisecond<<<(exaggeration)

It's a great OS. You can simply disable the quick corners if you want to, not problem there. In fact, there are a lot of settings to make the system behave more like Windows 7 so it's perfectly suited for a desktop computer rather than a tablet. Get Windows 8.1 and pin all the stuff you use to the start screen and try it out like it was intended to be used before installing 3rd party software. If you approach it with an open mind you will never look back.

why buy start is back if classic start has a bunch of customization functions and it's free? you can even choose what layout of the start menu you want to use.

anyway, I use win 7 because I have a lot of custom themes and I hate the look of the startup screen on windows 8 and am not in the mood to customize a new OS if I don't have any problems with my current.

BC start is back is not a process, it's integrated as the old one was, so can't crash.

just because it is infused into explorer.exe doesn't mean explorer.exe can't crash, it happens a lot on the computers of the illiterate. (this goes for both)

My best suggestion is try them all out before you pony up any cash to buy one.

Download the 8.1 Evaluation copy then build your PC and install it on it play around with it for as long as you like (90 days before it runs out) see what you think.

Download a Windows 7 iso and do the same, and download a linux distro (like Ubuntu) and do the same.

You don't even have to wait, if you have a spare blank HDD then 'burn' the OS you want to a USB or DVD, shut down your PC and remove all your HDDs, attach the blank HDD and install the OS on there to try out, after shut down remove the HDD and reattach your previous HDDs like you removed them, everything will be back to normal.

why is this even a question?

for gaming windows8.1 or 7 if you are a hater of the modern ui

if you are not a gamer and like open source stuff and the hazel it comes with then a distribution of linux, get Ubuntu  if you are a noob.

and do a Hakintosh build if you absolute want Mac OSX
