You need a router as all your LAN will go to WAN which is BAD. Something like the ERLite-3 would be needed. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA1EA0R09483

You want the switch behind your router, not in front of it.

You can't do that, the router is the device that "converts" internet/WAN traffic into intranet/LAN traffic. So you need a router between your switch and the modem. If you want to put a wireless access point somewhere else then disable the wireless portion of your router and get another device to work as an access point. Or disable the routing functions of the router and find another device to do the wireless functions.

In my setup I have:

port 1 of 8 port Gigabit Switch <- Router <- Modem <- Internet

port 2 -> PC1

port 3 -> PC2

port 4 -> N600 Access point -> Wireless devices

port 5 -> 5 Port Switch -> TV1 etc

port 6 -> 5 Port Switch -> TV2 etc

port 7 -> Multifunction Printer

port 8 -> NAS

I'd suggest you do something similar

ok so is there a device like a switch that will get the new setup to work i cant put my router in the basment cause it will degrade signel strength and i have more rooms then ports on the back of my router 8 rooms and 4 ports on router

 Routers and access points are not the same thing. Don't confuse them just because they tend to come in a combo unit most of the time. If you need an access point somewhere else then put an access point somewhere else and disable the wireless on your router.

If you can't move the router to the basement just buy 2 really long cate 5e or cate 6 cables. So it would go from modem to router to switch and then computers.

Okay so if i where to buy a router turn its WiFi off and then use a switch to split the connections to the rest of my house will that work

If you want your modem, router and all of your cables going to the basement and one wireless access point in another location? Yes. that's probably the best way to do it. Just make sure you only have one device doing all the typical routing functions. If you're using an old router as an AP make sure you disable DHCP and so on and leave that stuff to the router. Alternatively don't use an old router as an access point, if you're going to buy something new fix this problem get an access point. Something like this if you're on a budget: http://www.dlink.com.au/home-solutions/wireless-ac1200-dual-band-access-point

If you can't move the router to the basement just buy 2 really long cate 5e or cate 6 cables. So it would go from modem to router to switch and then computers.

I think the problem was more that the modem is in the basement and that's where the OP wanted the switch. But the problem with the basement is that it's not good for wireless reception. So no problem, don't use the wireless on the router! Use another access point for wireless. I mean sure the OP could run a cable from the modem to the router upstairs and then run a second cable back down to the switch. But that's not really that elegant and it's probably not better. Why move basically the whole setup just to move the wireless? If wireless and router are separate you can move the wireless to wherever you want on the network!!
