So I want to be able re-install windows XP onto my dads old work laptop, but thanks to s**** Windows customer service sucks, I don't have the OS disc, they don't support Windows XP so they wouldn't even talk to me once I got into chat. I do have the OS key but re-installing the OS without key wasn't going to happen.

But enough with that so since his security isn't allowing me to sign in to any website I want to download a Linux Distribution.

So 2 answers would be great.

1. What distribution is the closest to Windows?

2. What are your favorite distribution(s) and what do you like about them?

Thanks!

Xubuntu. Tweak the hell out of the desktop and it's a drop in replacement (at least in the aesthetics department). It's also really fast on any computer, for the most part. This is what my desktop used to look like on 12.04, and you have to admit, it's pretty damn close to Windows.

PC Linux OS/ Zorin OS/ Puppy Linux look just like Windows XP --> easy to use and get used to

For productivity ~ I like CentOS/ Fedora/ Mageia --> best for running 3D modelling and Audio Software

For learning ~ I like Arch/ Gentoo/ DSL

For ease of use ~ Pepperming/ Elementary/ Joli --> will just work!

For older PC ~ Lubuntu/ Xubuntu/ Puppy Linux/ Peppermint/ Elementary <-- will work on P4 and earlier processors with 512 MB of RAM

1. Zorin OS is the closest to Windows aesthetically.

2. My favorite is OpenSuse or Lubuntu

Thanks for recomending Zorin hopefully my computer runs faster with it :)

Kubuntu is quite alike to Windows out of the box but thanks to KDE it can become almost anything you like. I have it set up to be more similar to OSX.

I cannot be held responsible for any bad advice given.

I've no idea why the world is afraid of 3D-printed guns when clearly 3D-printed crossbows would be more practical for now.

My rig: The StealthRay. Plans for a newer, better version of its mufflers are already being made.

1. All of them with enough tweaks, though Zorin is closest out of the box.

2. Arch Linux. I love the bleeding edge software updates (which comes with pretty good stability). And the infinite customization with a blank slate is always nice.

1. Lots of good options have been posted already.

2. I am into Arch right now. But my favourite "easy to use" distro is Linux Mint (Cinnamon). A lot of what you need is ready out of the box, the layout is similar to Windows, and the edition that was just released has long term support so you'd be getting security fixes and updates until 2019. The nice thing about Linux Mint (and a bunch of other distros as well) is that you can burn a copy to a DVD/USB and try it out before making any changes to your computer.

I also agree with any if the *ubuntu flavours (not regular Ubuntu if you're looking for a Windows type of workflow). Ubuntu has a massive community behind it so questions you may have are probably already answered somewhere on the web.

But yeah, downloading a distro and trying the live version on a DVD/USB (when applicable) is a great way to see if you like it. I also check out YouTube videos on the distro I'm looking at to see what it's like before I even try the live version.

Really that's cool do you think you can show me a screenshot? :)

Thanks!

Out of the box (Everything is roughly where you'd expect it to be, coming from Windows)

Kubuntu-13-10-Saucy-Salamander-Screensho

My setup: very different. (black space on the left is my secondary monitor. I like it to have a black wallpaper)

Did you download the ISO and create a Live USB with Unetbootin?

Do you want to create a dual boot system(2 OS in one PC)?
