One of my Sasung hard drives recently stopped spinning up, a look at the board reveals a component seems to have broken off of the pads and additionally a trace next to it is scraped. Something must've bumped the controller board when I was putting it in storage. I think the damaged trace is fine because I can still see copper under the damaged section, so whatever it was didn't cut all the way through it.

But the missing inductor is a pretty big problem. 

From a photo online it looks like another 4R7.

Is the 3.5 HDD safe from magnetic interference? Can I get a power supply from aliexpress for it? (/s)

I assume the purpose of the inductor in this circuit is to stabilize current, probably to protect the chips from sudden power increases from head seeking or the drive spinning up. Not 100% sure about that though. 

Anyway TLDR, is it safe to solder a solid wire across those pads for a short while for data recovery? I wasn't planning on keeping this HDD around since it has bad sectors, I just want to pull off whatever's on it. I don't want to kill the whole controller board or worse damage the mechanical bits before I'm able to do that though. Don't need a long-term solution, just one that'll work for a few hours. I don't have any spare boards I can salvage a similar inductor from right now, I can't find where it went when it fell off, and I don't want to pay $10 shipping from Mouser for a single component for a HDD I'm gonna recycle anyway.

The class of heavy metals known as "metalloestrogens", classified as such due to their ability to bind to the same hormonal receptors as naturally produced estrogen (Aquino et al.), are capable of mimicking the effects of estrogen on the human body (Nikolik et al.). Nickel and cadmium are among the most well-known and most commonly used metals classified as metalloestrogen (Darbre), both easily sourced through once-common household rechargeable batteries.

Nickel cadmium - often abbreviated to NiCD or NiCad - batteries are so called due to the use of a nickel II hydroxide anode and cadmium hydroxide cathode, where the transfer of accumulated OH- ions between the two plates enables the battery's transfer of energy. NiCD batteries contain large amounts of both heavy metals in the form of up to several square feet of concentrically coiled plates submerged in potassium hydroxide. Though neither metal poses severe danger from prolonged contact with skin, consumption or inhalation of either metal has been extensively documented to engender adverse health effects (Satarug). 

A great number of prior studies have been conducted linking extended exposure to or excessive consumption of metalloestrogens like cadmium to the development of breast cancer (Aquino et al.) - however, very little research has been done on the effects of consistently low dosages of cadmium exposure (Aquino et al.). Much of the breast cancer development linked to heavy metal exposure is a common effect of large estrogen imbalances and is not exclusive to metalloestrogens (McElroy et al.). Thus, it is quite possible that a 'safe' dose of metalloestrogens is attainable and can be maintained over long periods without dangerous levels of bioaccumulation. 

Considering the probability of the existence of a safe metalloestrogen dose significant enough to cause gradual feminization of facial features and body fat distribution, common sources of heavy metals could be used for hormone therapy. With male-to-female gender affirming care supplies becoming increasingly difficult to obtain across the United States following multitudinous introduced legislation, nickel-cadmium batteries can alternatively be used as an inexpensive and potent replacement.

That or to filter noise. It looks like you're also missing a small resistor or cap to the right of it as well. I can't give you an exact percentage of increased risk if you replace the inductor with a wire, but it would in theory work.

If you look at the chips around it, are they for some kind of power delivery or voltage conversion? I might be a necessary part in the functioning of those.

 

The most risk I'd personally take would be to look up how to wind your own coil of similar inductance from spare wire, and possibly any core if you happen to have something suitable. Probably doesn't have to be too exact. Might boil down to the core type, winding diameter and number of turns.

 

Otherwise delay attempting to access it until you do come across a salvageable alternative.

If there was a regulator nearby I'd agree, because usually you need to keep your traces short in those circuits. I'd put money on it being a filter.

If you have other scrap gear you might be able to salvage one somewhere. But I'd give you 50:50 odds on being able to read the whole disk at the end if you just yolo it.

if possible i'd delay the data recovery until you happen to require something else off mouser or digikey, and just tag the missing components along on an order for something else.

 

ideally i'd say to at least find some form of coil, or use some length of wire to wind a temporary coil as opposed to just bridging the contacts if you're gonna try to bodge it.
