As announced in a Steam post, Splitgate 1 is having its servers shut down, BUT is making the game available to be played through peer-to-peer! They're also making every cosmetic available to all players, adding previously unreleased WIP content, and keeping cross-platform play with console players.

This is, IMO, really cool, and is a great step in the #StopKillingGames movement. There is, however, one downside: they're turning off their anti-cheat. I'm guessing this is a necessary evil, and maybe some local anti-cheat will remain, but seeing how there are no more official servers, anti-cheat being disabled seems inevitable to me.

I'd love to see Luke and Linus talk about this on the WAN show and hear their thoughts, especially regarding the anti-cheat problem for sunsetted games, which is one I've never heard them talk about, as far as I know.

This is good.

Could even open the doors to modding, especially now that the anticheat is gone.

Sure it might attract scumbags... But since you yourself would be hosting the servers and likely actively playing in it, it should be relatively easy to ban them right away instead of relying on a flawed anticheat system.

Dead game in general, it didn't cought up though. Was odd to me going for 2 really, so many failed "2" games lately.

That said, would be great to see UT revived as Epic killed it and deleted from stores.

Defo feels like this was also partially motivated by splitgate 2 being a absolute disaster on launch making them unlaunch the game haha. Good tho means people can at least keep enjoying the games they like

It IS. They said so in the July post that's mentioned in this new Steam post. But it's reasonable to cut server costs instead of firing employees. And if you're gonna do that, then doing this (which DID take work, let's not pretend that this was just commenting out a few lines of code) is a very ethical way of cutting costs.

I agree! And for the AntiCheat, that's a problem (if this is a comp shooter of sorts) but I guess there could be mods that implement a new AntiCheat.... I mean it's not the same thing, but meanwhile you can play PS3 games online without a PS3 or a PlayStation "network"... If they can do that they can also make an algo that can detect unrealistic behavior...

I mean technically yes, but it's a really bad idea to give players the option to boot everyone who's better than them (IMHO)

A network+anticheat AIO solution would be far better, possibly even make it so there's no need for a server (see above, works for PS3 emu etc)

UT?

you can play that right now, without giving random shoddy developers money (except for the game which you obviously will have to buy!) 👀

PS emulation? I mean PC and basically all of their series, they straight up removed them all. Yeah there are ways you can still play if you have the games and make servers, though it's not as easy or accessible to most. They did that even with latest in dev version which community helped.

Yes I'm just saying rpcs3 etc is always a good alternative, runs some games even better then the PC equivalents. Or just doesn't exist on "pc" like motorstorm, heavenly sword etc.

Network support is sketchy tbf,but if it works it's great actually!

I mean people that want to play it want to play it on PC higher fps as it's a competitive MP game though.

I mean, we had this for a long time before they took it away from us in the name of "anti cheat" BS that did not work anyway and it worked just fine.

If you get kicked out from a server by a raging admin, you simply move on to a different server or even make your own. It really is that simple. Not like there's any sort of progress to be lost here. This ain't like minecraft.
