Windows 8.1 tablet for $100

EMDOOR-EM-I8080.jpg

Are you ready for a $100 Windows 8.1 tablet? If you are, then the Computex trade show in Taipei, Taiwan is the place to be as a Chinese company called Emdoor is showing off the 8-inch EM-i8080 at the event.

The tablet has a 1280 x 800 IPS display, and inside there is an Intel "Bay Trail" Atom Z3735G processor. It also has 1 GB of RAM and 16 GB of SSD storage, along with a microSD slot for expansion. The tablet has ports for MicroUSB and Mini HDMI, along with what is described as an entry-level camera and stereo speakers. It is supposed to have a 18.5 Wh battery, but there's no word yet on how long its charge will last in the tablet.

It's safe to say that this $100 tablet is not going to offer owners a ton of hardware performance. However, it is an example of the types of low cost Windows 8.1 products we could see in the future, thanks to Microsoft's offering the cheaper Windows 8.1 with Bing to OEM makers.

The OS is the same as the regular Windows 8.1 with the only difference being that any devices that use it have Bing as the default search engine. Owners can change Bing to any other search engine after they purchase the product.

There's no word on when this tablet will be released, but it's likely that Emdoor will offer this product to other companies that will rebrand it and sell it with different names later in the year.

What do you think about the prospect of buying a $100 Windows 8.1 tablet? Is it something you might jump on or do you think the low price point comes with too many hardware trade offs?

This is a pretty nice device but the price point is amazing. Wonder what things they had to reach this price point besides cheap camera and speakers. It seems to run pretty smooth in the video but I haven't found any other videos which shows things such as using metro apps and browsing the web.

OMG, That's really cheap. good battery life?

It should because the atom takes little to no power and there aren't too many pixels to drive.

I'd like to see some videos on it, if it's ok + the display looks nice (800p on an 8in tablet should look pretty nice?) I'm down for buying one when they come out.

I think the price is cool, but honestly, I'd think they should have targeted $150 or $200 to make a device you'd actually want to use.

This is exactly the same as with the low cost android ones. If you actually use the device for more than a few 2d games and checking your email and fb dont take this one. But it is showing that we can have cheap Win8.1 devices and hopefully it will allow the launch of more of these cheap tablets and make the prices of MS own Surface products drop a bit (I love Surface but it is too expensive just like most other mid/high end WinRT Win8.1 tablets)
