Hello!

I have a Windows 11 AMD Zen 5 PC, with firmware & drivers up to date, and I am using as a backup drive this External HDD:

WD Elements 25A3.

<Problem>

When trying to disconnect this eHDD from the system, I am getting this error:

"Windows can't stop your Volume device because a program is still using it".

But there should be no program "still using it", as data backup (copy/paste) is the only use for this drive.

In the past I wasn't getting this error.

Now, I simply disconnect the eHDD from the USB cable.

<What I've tried>

1. Drive optimize (Windows).

2. Device Manager/ Update drivers (but there are none).

<Question>

What are my options to solve this issue?

You don't have task manager open by any chance?

The last time something like that happened to me, service(s) of a software (forgot what software, been awhile) was the cause.

Since it's just the service file, it only shows up in task manager list. The actual software itself wasn't launched.

edit: I remember the software now

It was SuperDisplay desktop app, my guess that it went bonkers and consider anything plugged into USB port as either a tablet or secondary display, and grab hold of it.

Sure didn't give me that problem when I first installed it a year-ish ago. Maybe updating my windows broke it.

There is approximately 99% chance I edited my post

Try ejecting a second time. Usually works for me when this happens.

Hello!

I am not using SuperDisplay, but there's, surely, some Windows 11 v24H2 crap, because, if I remember corectly, I did not have this issue on Windows 11 v23H2.

Hello!

I did try it.

But, I'm getting this error again & again, for a long time, until I'm unplugging the USB cable, manually!

<Update>

Hello!

I have solved the issue.

Strangely enough, the issue was my previous antivirus: ESET Smart Security.

A few days ago I've switched to Panda Dome Essential antivirus, and the problem disappeared, completely!

PS:

I hope that this post will help someone, someday.
