Yo,

I have old Windows XP pc and upgraded it with 2GB RAM and a Graphics card, i wanted to Play with my friends minecraft and would use it as Server. Any idea how i can get Internet running on the thing plus a client?.

It is a Medion Model: PC MT6, PLU 783
Med MT.

do i need a extra network card or something?

Yeah no that is far too weak maybe in minecraft 1.3 or something it could have struggled along running a minecraft server but anything remotely modern this is WAY too low end.

Just running a low end modern linux distro on this will already be a lot of work for that pentium 4. Then the issue that you don't have enough ram to really do anything and well its also not efficient in the slightest so high power draw.

Do you have 50$ that can get you some used office machine with a 4th gen i5 or something. That is well 20x faster pretty much 😛

Funny seeing my first pc show up. Remember playing mc 1.4.2 on it and it barely running haha

Yeah thx and i am happy that i got the pc.

it got a special intel CPU or a special varient that could boost higher, my uncle said he tried to get it for years.  Plus the PC is a literal Jet turbine, i wanted to send it to LTT to let them make a video about pcs with such CPU cooler.

Also the Pc has some weird AV and Scart input, my uncle said you could once connect VCR and all to it and watch on pc, but it requires a special graphics card that was very known for breaking a weird ATI one, do you maybe know which?

Sorry, but that computer is far too old to be a viable Minecraft server. Its processor is too slow and it doesn't support nearly enough RAM. You would also have to set up port forwarding or run a VPN if you want your friends to connect to it.

I think you're better off renting a "real" server hosted in a datacenter, either from a third party or an official Minecraft Realm. It might actually cost less than the electricity to run that ancient computer 24/7.

Does he have a bridge to sell, too?

Even if he did get some magic processor, it's still going to be a Pentium 4. Those weren't very fast when they were new, and that was 20 years ago. Anything new is going to run circles around it, even a laptop or Intel N100 based mini PC.

I sold my soul for ProSupport.

i have a later version of these.. or rather.. had. i traded the broken motherboard for some parts.

i'm gonna assume the build quality of yours is similar to mine.. and say that this thing is just ticking it's way to death sooner or later.

Even a pentium extreme edition is like WAY too slow.

I know that pc it literally is what I used for 6 years and to this day still have with me.

Its extremely slow and good luck even browsing the web let alone run a minecraft server

These pcs are free nowadays because of their uselessness to do basically anything remotely modern.

I know this I ran it till 2014 and well it was having a pretty hard time by then to be internet ready already.

Every p4 machine is with those shitty caps on the board. Recapped mine.

Ati radeon 9600 tx NOT the 9600 xt the tx is one Medion made.

Just get a 50$ i5 4th gen office pc with 8gb of ram or more and preferably a ssd and send it.

false.

i've got 3 P4 machines on the shelf that are still perfectly happy. the medion i have is much newer (core2) and broke, presumably because the cpu cooler had such poor tolerances that it pulled the board into a bowl shape.

still i must say i cant turn the pc on at night i swear to god,

suck cooler are louder than a ps4 or laptop when its cranked up. I mean yeah its for cooling but still.

And thx my uncle mentioned a Radeon one, he meant its basically screen capture before screen capture really. He also said there was some weird stuff back then and said this was just so you could connect anything to the pc and use it on your pc. like a monitor or so.

tho he recommed me to find a trust worthy buyer since like he said they were very faulty or bricked easily.

Nah but the old power supply in there has a bit bulked caps, we put off the hood of it and my uncle said basically "use it with no high power consumption and mostly not till you find a safe one" xD

the motherboard caps are fine completly since the computer was not really used much.  Plus i found it on the street with a package will all driver cds, printer cds and well r34 stuff on the computer from very back plus a cracked banned horror movie.

Thx man, i will try to find one even though they are faulty.

so i hope mine will run then atleast a month or so.  Do you have also any idea for internet connection?

I mean yeah dont pluck xp into internet or virus i know, but i got a anti virus programm and Linus once used in a video the only still working network card.

True,

i just thought basically "maybe i dont have to spend money".  thats all.   Anyway any tips for making the pc internet ready somehow? i play recently some Alien vs predator 2 and it seems like a community still makes online servers somehow, but idk how to connect since i dont got a extra network card

That's bad advice as PC power consumption varies, you could get a sudden spike at any time.

Faulty caps will likely mean the PC is getting unstable power, it could destroy everything and certainly increases the chance of stressing the motherboard caps so those fail too.

Also the chance of the capacitors just randomly exploding is fairly high.  In a worst case scenario this can lead to a fire.

This pc has a ethernet port.

Remove xp and install a somewhat recent lightweight linux distro on it.

No remotely recent version of minecraft or mc server supports xp. It cannot work on xp in any way shape or form EVER for anything recent.

An anti virus wont do shit against xp being online. That and no modern antivirus supports xp since xp has been end of life for over a decade.

What do you mean by that? Plenty of those officr machines on ebay just working fine.

TERRIBLE advice.

Genuine safety hazard right there. Bulking caps psu is a legit fire risk and biohazard of a serverly high risk due to how much power goes through those. Seen them turn into temporary flamethrowers or fumeblasters on multiple occasions.

Also if you just browse the web or run a minecarft server that cpu will be at 100% nonstop being a BIG POWER LOAD. As pentium 4 cpu's ESPECIALLY the high clocked ones consumed a lot of power.

Ok so you have NO CLUE how much it has been used.

Since the caps in the psu are bad that is usually a sign its been used A SHITTON since medion did use decent fsp psu's in most of these so that shows a LOT of wear usually.

Either way op to get this internet ready use something like puppy linux.

But again it is SO OLD as in legit 20 years or more it will have a bad time loading static websites and such. It cant run a minecraft server of any modern version to save its life as its WAY below the min spec you need.

Maybe if you only render a single chunk, have no mobs and only have 1 other person you MIGHT have a playable experience somewhat.

Aaah yeah they did have those weird big block coolers on it for a while. Should've specified that most p4 boards were plagued by the capacitor issue and usually only s478 or that inbetween s370 and s478 socket I forgot about.

Since medion was real popular here at the beginning of me doing pc repair I had quite a few recap jobs 😛 on s478 systems. Lga 775 has been fine basicallg always. Same with late s478 boards.
