Hey there guys,

So I was talking to someone at my college about installing Windows 8.1 in a new build, I said I'm going to be trying to use a SSD instead of an HDD for the speed factor, I said I was going to try and install it onto a single 120GB SSD for the installation so what he suggested was that using 2x 60GB SSD's for a similar price with a decent read and write speed would provide a tangable speed improvement during boot.

so just wondering first of all is it actually possible to install an OS across 2 drives in a RAID 0 configuration, secondly will the performace improvements from doing this be significant enough to justify it in the first place?

Many Thanks

It is possible, but I wouldn't do it because you have 2 points of failure then, instead of one.

RAID 0 for the OS disk is rarely a good idea. As @lufihengr said, it's two points of failure bs one. You also deal with all the inherent problems and glitches that occasionally pop-up when using RAID 0 for an OS disk (often none, but often tons of little issues, glitches, errors, weird behaviour, etc).

YES, there will be a performance increase. YES you *might* notice it. NO, it's not worth the hassle and potential issues.

If you've never used an SSD as a boot drive before, then you don't really know what you're getting. Let me tell you, going from a HDD to an SSD is the SINGLE BIGGEST performance increase you can get these days. It's like night and day. The snappiness of Windows is just so much better. Everything opens faster, clicks are faster, etc.

Honestly, just stick with 1x 120GB SSD. It's good enough in size to hold your basic programs, and it'll be fast enough for you. I highly recommend the Samsung 840 EVO drives personally. Just remember to install a HDD as a second data storage drive, and save ALL your documents, pictures, videos (esp videos), and games (Change your steam library location to D Drive instead of C Drive) onto the HDD.

Thanks, I did think abut the increased chance of failure with two seperate drives and I didnt assume it would make much difference to me since Ive been running HDD's so far on all my machines. Thanks for the help everyone, but before I go what size storage would you reccomend for the Widows 8.1 boot drive will 120GB be enough?
