hdr looks crappy

so i recently bought a new monitor, its ips wfhd 100hz one with hdr and freesync support and after turning on hdr in monitor settings it shows hdr option, but when i enable it, i feel like everything gets deep fried or super high contrast, any ideas how to fix it? oh, also my intel graphic centre wont save brightness at 50 and keeps reverting it to 38 each time i reboot

This has been a big problem with windows for some time, the HDR implementation is terrible. Last time I ran into this issue, I changed drivers to fix it. Though, I have an nvidia graphics card

Yes, turn it off. Traditional LCD monitors do not have near enough brightness, backlight uniformity, and black levels to actually be HDR. You need an OLED monitor or a mini LED monitor. SDR is enough.

At this point the Windows desktop indeed looks trash in HDR, so you basically need to turn HDR on when watching HDR videos/playing games in HDR and back off for desktop use...

Am I doing something wrong cause I don't notice a major difference between SDR on my monitor(LG c2) and HDR and letting windows do the conversion. I prettly much always leave it on HDR mode cause a few apps use HDR(videos, lightroom) and its easier that switching when launching a app.

It's not a Windows issue and hasn't been for a long time. Windows does correctly convert the SDR content when in HDR mode. Most monitor brands however still haven't figured out how to properly implement SDR content in their HDR mode. LG is one of the very few brands that do a good job at it. On my C2 there is no measurable difference between having Windows in SDR or HDR mode when it comes to color accuracity for SDR content.

 

Basically, it's not a Windows problem. If the desktop (which is SDR) looks bad when HDR is enabled, it's a monitor problem.

You should tell us your monitor model, but judge from this spec, I assume it is not high-end model and HDR only work good in high-end model monitor and perfectly fine in OLED (except Asus always screw up and need few months to solved it).

Intel implementing HDR is the worst, some older Intel iGPU is even give you crazy lag experience once you turn on HDR.

I agree, it's compicated. Even after years of being a display enthusiast and learning about HDR, Dolby Vision, calibration and all the other things about displays I'm still learning. And judging by how many brands still reliably fuck up their HDR monitors, it's something they're still learning about aswell. So far it seems LG is the only brand that can reliably do it right.
