is she going to use it as a Cash Register machine?  If so, in what capacity?  Connecting to a Square dongle and process payments? Or she just does that for her job?

For $70, it's a 13 year old machine that MAY work fine for simple tasks.

I would absolutely not run that.  A 13 year old laptop is well beyond its expected lifespan.

What are the actual requirements for what she needs to do

i'm confused by what you mean with "for a cashier"?

are you just saying she's a cashier and just happens to need a laptop on the cheap.. or is this a laptop to be used by a cashier for their cashier duties?

because if the latter - you should be buying something reliable, because downtime means income lost.

and if the former... the point that your aunt is a cashier is entirely irrelevant.

As mentioned above, is this just that you need a laptop for her on a budget? Or is this going to be used as a POS machine?

First gen i series will do ok enough with modern usage, it’ll support windows 10 or current Linux fine, YouTube and web browsers in general won’t have any issues on it.

Id be more concerned about the age of the machine in general, where you’d rarely see any effective battery life left, so you’d more than likely need a new battery.

no, 8gb of ram is not enough for any modern payment processing website.
for gods sake for $70 you can buy a much newer laptop
dont buy anything without tpm2.0

lmao what payment processing website are you using??? 8 tabs and some background apps don't even hit 4GB

Spoiler

Also why is TPM 2 so important?

i5 520m is not the strongest of CPUs even from the first-gen, but if it's in good shape (EG working battery) $70 is not a bad deal. Although I do assume that drive is a HDD not an SSD.

If the battery isn't good and the drive is a HDD, $70 is too much. I'd pay at most $50 for it in that case.

windows 11 itself consumes like 5GB. I'm doing nothing with my laptop and its at 12GB of ram used

Bizarre, I've never seen usage anywhere near that high at idle.

Windows 10/11 generally run a few web browser tabs totally fine with 8GB RAM.

That's slightly and INCREDIBLY different professions 🙂

What does she do on the laptop?  Economists can run very large models in Excel for instance.

$70 seems way too light a budget for someone with a professional career.  Can you give us more relevant information?

Yep, a little bit. For $70 you're not going to get anything worthwhile really.  Casts offs and people throwing away etc.

Really?   Maybe.  If you're just going by the word and not having an idea what she actually does at all?  Cuz they sounded similar in the native tongue?
