@TheTiger
Controller?

Sorry for intruding on all of you but I have come to seek your assistance.

I am thinking about going to university in Germany for electrical engineering, although many of you are not German I believe you can help me anyway. As I am not a German speaker I would have to take a mandatory one year course to learn German and local culture if I want to go to a good university like TU Darmstad where the courses are in German. This year is not required if I go to a lower ranked university like Duisburg-Essen. This ends me up with a few questions:

1. Is one year enough for me to be able to not fail my courses the second year?

2. Is this a good idea in general?

3. Is it a better idea to come with an Egyptian or Canadian passport?

4. In my position would you go to the higher ranked university that is 4 years where the first year is just learning the German way or would you go with the lower ranked university where it is 3 years and the first year studies are in English.

For cost it is roughly the same as going to my local university.

If you have anything else to say please tell me.

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

Nearly everybody in this thread is German and/or living in Germany ;)

However, I don't know how easy/hard it is to learn the German language so that you are able to understand your studies right from the beginning.
Besides that it's also a fact of how much you already know about electrical engineering or how easy you're able to learn new things.

E.g. one of my courses is electrical engineering, however I don't get a single word the proffessor is saying during class, even tho I'm able to understand German.

It's just me, not beeing into electrical engineering.

You'll have no problem if you're able to learn new things fast enough, that was my point :D

one year can be enough to get a rough idea on how things work out over here - not necessarily enough to learn the language. It depends on your efforts and circumstances during your stay but I'd say a year is not enough to really learn german.

However you don't necessarily need to speak fluent german to get your studies done. Many thing can be looked up in english and when you have a rough understanding of german it might be enough. Where I see some issues is the written exam since those probably arent available in english.

For a passport I dont really know but I guess a canadian is better than an egyptian one looking at the political situation - although I doubt it really makes a difference.

I'd say for your own good the higher ranked university is better, dont expect to finish within those 4 years though. Many of us here are going to uni or already quit and I can tell you it is not going as planned nor easy.

Ultimately do what you like to do and choose with your future in mind.

Thank you.

For passport it is easier to get into Germany with a Canadian passport (no visa required) but I think you get some benefits with going with an Egyptian passport as it is a "developing country".

I was definitely leaning towards the 4 year option but can you elaborate on "not going as planned".

One more question for you. How competitive is it for a place in good universities?

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

well.. I started computer science and electrical engineering in 2013 since I've been quite active in the field for many years now and have the talent for the IT-part if I may say so myself. But I quit in 2014 since I failed theoretical math again and again although I graduated with math and IT as my main subjects..

so I personally am no friend of the german university system.. you do have the option to choose your subject and improve even further at the stuff you're already good at - however, the subjects suddenly involve other subjects you acutally never need for the jobs you could apply to later on. and sometimes they even go so far into detail that it doesnt matter if you are good at the core competences like IT in my case - I was one of the best in the IT courses, but one of the worst in the theoretical math courses which made me fail computer science, an IT subject.. ultimately I didnt even get to the electrical part of my studies since I quit after the first semester.

Now I am doing an apprenticeship as an IT-specialist for systemintegration doing network engeneering, administration etc etc. Everybody experiences stuff differently so dont take my word for it when I say it doesnt play out as planned but just as an example: about 70% of my friends that started uni at the same I did have quit by now due to very similar reasons.

There is an university in my area that dropped the math part of computer science last year since so many students failed it and quit their studies - so I might actually begin my studies anew over there in 2017 when I'm done with my  apprenticeship.

Totally agree from the view of a production-engineering student!

I think that 1 year of just learning german is more than enough to be good at it if you train every day. On the other hand it surprises me that there are no universities offering electrical engineering with english lectures. You should definiteley write an email to the responsible professor at the university of your interest if it is possible to hold the lecture in english. In life sciences this is generally more often the case but it might be possible in an engineering class aswell. At my university (i study chemistry) the professors are even tied to do the lecture in english if there is a foreigner in class.

If you ask for english in class you will always be popular and people will look at you very niceley [/irony] but you could at least visit some lectures while learning german.

who cares...

There is one university I found that offers the first year in English but is fairly low ranked. Duisburg-Essen.
