TV without smart TV

Hello Community,

I am currently facing a challenge.

I have been tasked with finding an alternative. My boss has requested that I find a suitable 60-65 inch (75 is the largest that would fit) TV for our meeting room, we are a small engineering team. The TV will be used for reviewing marketing materials such as video ads and technical drawings, so high resolution and contrast are important, but refresh rate is less of a concern(but would be maybe nice for some after hour gaming) .

My boss has suggested some 400-500€ TVs he found online, but our IT department has already stated that they will not approve a smart TV.

I have come across some conference room displays and monitors, but they can be quite expensive, starting at 1500€ and are sometimes only compatible with certain conference systems. On the other hand, there are signage displays that have excellent specifications but are also very costly. I was recently asked why TVs with all the processing power are much cheaper than similar systems that include 'smart' technology. It can be challenging to find a TV without these additional features.

The signage screens often run on some form of Android. We require a screen with display and HDMI input, without an operating system, and at an affordable price.   Can someone assist me with this? I am unsure how to search for such a product.

Is here anyone who could just give me some hints how i would find something like that? Or has ideas?

Best wishes and Ahoi!

Simply not possible if you want a 65 inch. Smart tvs are HEAVILY subsidized by ads hence why they are so cheap.

Philips has a whole range of meeting room tvs but its gonna be thousands for one.

Id say have a talk with it to get a smart tv passedand just never ever hook it up to the ethernet. Thats probably the main concern here.

Most TVs now are smart, it's rare to find a non-smart TV. Why can't it be smart? I understand that your IT department said it can't be, but any reason?

How about something like this? It's 55" but it appears to be a relatively cheap dumb TV.

It's also 4k.

I love making PCPartPicker lists.

Their IT department most likely doesn't want a user asking for support for a "feature" of the smart TV, like installing an app they don't want to support, or the fact someone can log into a google account, privacy concern.

That TV comes with software that is on a subscription service and Samsung Pro TV app, which support will classify as a smart tv, its an additional app they would need to support.

what's wrong with just getting a computer monitor?

The answer to PC cooling is aircon. RGB sucks. Have you tried turning it off and on again

Most TV is smart TV especially with such big screen. If it is due to security concern, your IT dept should know without network connection, the smart feature is not able to work. They is no worried on information leakage if security is the concern issue.

Nothing's wrong with that, but most 65-inch computer monitors are $2000, 240hz, curved, 4k ultrawide, etc...

Your boss is either going to have this discussion with your IT people or seriously bump up your budget, because non-smart TVs only exist as those expensive displays.

If you never hook up a smart TV to internet it's not a smart TV. The hard part would be keeping a random user from going into the settings and logging into wireless themselves. It would be a minor inconvenience, but IT could block the TV from accessing the internet on the firewall or block the device on the wireless network. Not sure of their availability in EU, but check out this Viewsonic

Yeah the whole SMART fandango goes in and out of the Android and the proprietary stuff.

I've still got a 60'er Sharp downstairs, it's pretty nice... 4 subcolor pixels, whatnot. Old school TV, does the trick though.

If you're going BIG, get the smart stuff as well. Nothing wrong with it. Grab a proper TV, but if you want to ditch the smart stuff so much... they make Wall TVs and whatnot. Literal TVs that remind you of street marketing boards.

I had this issue but since it wasn't work related I just went for a mid 00s 36 inch CRT that was only used for a couple of months according to the seller. It's almost impossible to find a "dumb" TV set unless you go used, but those are mostly 31.5" or 39", at least the ones I've seen were. You won't find anything that big that's dumb, because it didn't exist back then, at least not in the mainstream market.

You could find a monitor that big but it'll be costly, as said above "smart" stuff is cheap because of all the ads.

Internet isn't the only concern. With smart TVs you're actually purchasing a computer rather than a standalone TV, it has to go through its own boot process and load a bunch of stuff apparently they won't ever use at OP's company. If all you do is use the HDMI1 input there's no reason to justify everything else, but apparently people looking for new screens have no choice than suck it up and deal with it anyway. That sucks.

Look at the price tag for this thing, which is literally a raw display with no smart features or TV tuner.

If things were logical the price should be lower, not higher 😕

Caroline doesn't need to hear all this, she's a highly trained professional.

That size and budget won't work without a smart TV. Business models are the only "dumb" ones and they're always much more expensive. If you go with a consumer-class TV, pretty much all of them are smart TVs nowadays. You can still just not plug them into the internet though, which should fix any concerns your IT department should have.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

Smart TV is not very slow now, it won’t take up very long time for boot up.

It is more value than purposely find none smart TV which basically more expensive or old tech.
