i have a msi mag a750gl and a b650 gaming x ax v2 i lost my 4 pin but i have the 8 pin the motherbourad has 8 and 4 pin i pulg the 8 pin in do i  need the four pin

No, you do not need the 4pin for the motherboard. The 8 pin is enough 🙂

Absolutely. The 8 pin provides more power than any Ryzen 7000 CPU needs 🙂  Even the 7950x would run on an 8pin.

I think the MB also knows which ports aren't occupied

Not really. There aren't any sense pins on the EPS power connector, so unless the motherboard manufacturer goes out of their way to figure that out, they can only tell if there is any power connector or no power connector.
