There are workloads that need more VRAM than most cards have. It's not about games.

There are specific production workloads where more VRAM is always better, but in terms of games i agree. In a future where 44 GB is actually required the GPU itself won't be fast enough to play these games anyway. Overclocking also won't be enough to bridge that gap.

Considering that the Quadro RTX 8000 GPU that was removed to make this mod happen is more powerful than the RTX 2080 Ti, including having Quadro features like enhanced precision, I don't think this was about any workload at all.

 

Pretty sure this was done more to see if they could, rather than any concerns about whether or not they should.

Yes, I was commenting on why would anyone want 44GB on even an older and weaker card. Not that it makes sense to do this mod.

Just to make things clear:

They got a RTX 8000 (which has a 384 bit bus and 48gb of vram), removed the GPU die (which is a TU102), and soldered the die from a 2080ti (which is also a TU102, but a worse bin), which only has a bus of 352-bit, hence why only 44gb of vram, it lacks the extra memory controller (that has 2 memory ICs) the original GPU had.

 

They couldn't make anything run on it, be it games or other workloads.

 

I wouldn't call this a 2080ti mod, more like a RTX8000 downgrade mod lol

Fun fact, the last quadro that had FP64 was the V100 Quadro, which was based on the... V100 chip. The last non x100 chips to have FP64 were the kepler ones, every non-100 chip after that lacks full FP64 support, be it quadro, tesla or geforce.

So the only extra now is just the fancy certified drivers, and having a reasonable amount of VRAM, unless you shell out the massive amount needed to get a top tier H100? So their datacenter line is now just straight up consumer chips with extra VRAM that cost a ton more?

 

No wonder Nvidia needs to price GeForce so high and put restrictions in the driver EULA that says you can't use the cards for datacenters...

Yes, also the VRAM is slower and GDDR6, there are no professional GPUs using GDDR6X on the green side. Those chips also have ECC.

Apart from the x100 and its derivatives, yes.
