Basic NAS based on J4125-ITX

Country: Germany

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: I'm planing to build a small PC and use it as my NAS (with open media vault). 

Other details: I already have 2 1TB SSDs (for stuff I need often) and am planing to add 2 8TB HDDs later (for stuff I don't need often). Both will be in software raid using OMV. 

 

I currently have my eyes on this board https://www.asrock.com/MB/Intel/J4125-ITX/index.asp. As far as I can tell this should be powerful enough. I can get 8GB of RAM for 20EUR no problem, but I was wondering about the case and the power supply. I wasn't sure what power supply I would need. I don't want it to be overkill.

 

+ is using the J4125-ITX for a small NAS a reasonable idea in the first place?

+ the board has a 2.0PCIEx1 slot. Could I put a SATA extension card there to give me more SATA ports in the future or is it too slow?

+ one of my primary concerns is that my NAS must be able startup and shutdown relatively quickly, since it cannot be plugged into power 24/7 (Meaning not taking 5 minutes to boot up like my current solution. I was thinking about max. ~30 seconds).

Consider buying the intel N100.

Agree with above, if you're not opposed to getting one from China, you can go on aliexpress and find loads of systems based on n100 cpu, and is mini PC sized, which means no worrying about power supply etc, just pick one that you need, for example some come with 2 sata SSD/HDD slots... but bear in mind that those one can be much more expensive.

My preference would be to go with a normal mini pc box, and use the USB for storage, along with an external USB drive, or possibly a HDD dock for example. If it's just for home usage, that should be plenty fast enough, I've used USB storage drives in the past with no problems at all.

I personally really dislike the thought of having drives dangling around. It has to be all in one case + It must be able to survive being moved around (not an abnormal amount but like disconnecting external drives when carrying it from one room to another is out of the question.)
+ I really need at least 4 drives.
