2TB 970 EVO Plus vs 1Tb 990 Pro for Boot Drive, 3rd Party Perspective

Whats up ?

So I need an opinion here, maybe im missing something.

 

So ill be rebuilding my PC in new smaller case with external rad, and ill be re-doing windows 11, fresh format...

My current setup has the "Ultimate OS drive": 480GB Intel Optane, but because new mobos lack on PCIe slots and right now its plugged with M2 to PCIe x4 adapter that has no way to screw the card and its heavy, bending the flimsy PCIe slot, i shoved between the PCIe cover and the card some cardboard.

 

So I already have 2TB 970 EVO Plus and 1TB 990 Pro, my mistake that i got the 990 Pro during its first sale over a year ago,  because months later i could grab the 2Tb for same price, but right now I cant afford to buy 2Tb and then look to sell the 1Tb model.

 

So basically this, i dont care about its size for file storage, only in a matter: bigger size = more ram cache, higher TBW, higher speed.

I also know that gen4 doesn't really mean anything for an OS drive, 4K R/W and latency does.

Maybe somehow it can be that the older gen3 with 2Gb RAM cache can be faster for the os vs newer but only 1gb ram cache ssd?

You just have to buy one that have them, I went for 14 gen intel and z690 mobo, as amd just lack PCIe and M.2… 

 

if not for that, I would have bought AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D

as for OS, from the two you got, I would go 990 pro.

 

or use some verticale PCIe mount , there are some for PCIe sleds. 
look for them if you have space.

you could just mount it from the other side. Or even above the GPU, if the GPU is one PCIe slot down. 

actually, now that I think about it, I could probably mount my U.2 like that, but well I could also just mount it vertical in case side.
