Remote windows desktop on Dex

I'm stuck abroad for some time but I still have to work. Work is office based so in theory just remoting in should be enough.

I'd want to use my S23+ with its Dex feature. In theory plug into a monitor, have a wireless mouse and keyboard, connect through a remote desktop app and good to go.

Is this true? Can Samsung Dex do that? And if so, do any remote desktop apps that have a Dex compatible web app work or is there more to it? I really don't want to spend money and buy a spare laptop I'll use for a few weeks purely for remote sessions that will then become ewaste.

Ooof, Dex is such a niche usecase that there is not a ton of info out there about its performance limitations. Is there any way you can test this out before you leave?

As for remote desktop apps, assuming you are free to choose, Chrome Remote isn't terrible, and if your work PC has an Nvidia card and you can get port forwarding/VPN, you could definitely try Moonlight

As for this, I'd talk to IT and see if they have a hot spare unit they could lend out to you. Alternatively you could grab something middle of the road off ebay for ~300$, then flip it when you get home

No no, it's not that I'm planning on getting stuck, I am stuck. I didn't have time to prepare nor ask my boss if I can just take a spare laptop.

It's either I spend now a bit on an hdmi dongle to see if the Dex works or cash out some 300eur for a laptop that I'll use for a month at the longest.

Any RDP client should work, it essentially will show you the tablet layout... Pretty terrible usability IMO, but maybe not compared to a bargain bin laptop.

Oh noes!

You know.... it's unethical, but most laptop retailers have 30 day return policies. You could buy one, use it, then return it. Probably out under 100$ and you can get a latest generation piece of kit. Just peeped Dell and they say they will refund 100% less shipping fees. You can say "it doesn't suit requirements" and it should be no questions asked
