Will a general modular power cable (PSU to PCIe) work on my Dell Precision 5820?

I got a Dell Precision 5820 which came without the GPU cables. For low power cards you can make do with the power from the PCI bus. But I want to install something bigger. The genuine dell cables are expensive even on ebay, like £25 to £40. I have read that Corsair cables are non-standard, and I see their arrangement of squares and Ds are different on the PSU side.

 

Will generic modular PCIe to PSU connectors work on the Dell 5820? Here is the official cable from ebay, showing the connectors (black and yellow cables).

 

This is a generic modular PSU to PCIe connector (second image with black cables). The arrangement of squares and Ds is the same as the required cable.

I have a multimeter. How would I check the pins are in the right place? I want to do this carefully.

These adapter cables are designed to tap the unused second 10-pin port on the 5820's distribution board. If you can get your hands on one, I'd recommend that. (I have a 3090 waiting to go into a 5820 with one of these.) If not, you should be able to reverse engineer it from the listing photos.

I wouldn't go plugging random stuff in without verifying for absolute certain that the pins connect where they're supposed to.
