Looking for a 4TB M.2 SSD--How is the Acer Predator GM7000?

Soapy1234

Hi all,

As the title says.  My current 2TB M.2 SSD (Sabrent Rocket) that I use as a boot drive and to hold my programs, docs, games (not many), and downloads is almost full, so it's about time for me to upgrade it, and considering prices are supposed to climb soon, I'm thinking of jumping on it sooner rather than later.

Going through PCPartpicker, I found the Acer Predator GM7000, which is TLC, $260 as of right now, and 4GB of cache.  Seems like a good choice (ESPECIALLY considering the price compared to something like another Sabrent or a Samsung), but I was wondering if anyone else had any other suggestions, or if I should just save for the Sabrent or the Samsung.

Prices have already gone through the roof. Some of them are up 70% in cost from just october/november.

What is your MOBO that you are using? Cause you may not have to replace your current drive, just adding it to another slot.

I have a 4tb GM7000, and anecdotally the performance is great, no loading time issues or any reason to think the drive it bottlenecking anything.

One consideration though it that the drive is very thick as far as M.2 drives go. If you have a ITX motherboard where the drives are stacked, or a laptop with tight space tolerances like a Razer, you may not be able to get the GM7000 physically installed. in which case you'd need a single sided 4tb SSD like the Lexar NM790, or a 2tb single sided drive like a 980 or 990 pro.

GM7000 4TB is good PCIe 4.0 SSD    https://www.techpowerup.com/ssd-specs/acer-predator-gm7000-4-tb.d1223
It's not at the top, but very good SSD, with 4-core, 8 channel controller, DRAM, and 176l TLC Micron NAND.

I have a Z390 Designare, but everything else is already taken because I use a ton of drives for sample streaming for orchestral VST libraries--orchestra sounds and the like.  When I upgrade to something newer (maybe next gen is where things are looking, Thunderbolt 5 looks really nice for what I want to use it for), I'll likely have enough space for more M.2 drives.

Shouldn't be an issue, this will be a standard ATX install.

Out of curiosity, what features would make it "better"?

Better then now?
Better, faster 8-channel controller ( this one is 1200MTps, the fastest on the market are 2400MTps), or faster NAND like 232l TLC micron   2400MTps.

or is the question, about what makes this SSD good?
then it’s 8 channel reasonable fast controller with dram on 4TB SSD, and good 176l TLC micron nand.
