will transcoding my h264 videos to av1 help me save storage space?

I have some videos that i took, and that are encoded in h264, however, they are rather large files, if i out them through handbrake, and set the encoder to av1 along with the fast 1080p preset(They are very long 1080p video files) can i save space?

PS how do i do the same for 4k files?

ALSO: VLC can playback av1 files right?!

In theory yes, but you'll have to experiment a lot to find the right settings.

any advice on where to start?

I'm open to a recommendation of any other free programs that can help me do this

Pick a file and try it?

AV1 is a more efficient encoder so for the same quality, it should save space. However re-encoding will result in a little loss of quality in itself separate from that. So you'll need to find a setting that gives smaller files than before at a quality you are happy with.

again, where should i look for the settings that make to most difference?
