good gpu on the used market for about 400 usd?

anon12

I am looking to get a new gpu most likely off eBay, and looking for what would be the best one to go for at around 400 usd. right now looking at the rtx 3080, or the rx 6800xt, open to any other cards too, and don't care if they are AMD, or nvida, just whatever would be best for the price. Thank you for any advice you can give.

3080 is probably the best choice for the price for a used card in that budget, though sometimes you can get lucky auction hunting and snag a 6900 xt for around $450 if you’re willing to wait and search while bumping up the budget.

Though a 3080 at $400 is a lot more consistent of something to find.

I also recommend ten 750ti’s to join the superior user base of 750ti users as an alternative.

Damn ppl still buying that gpu for 40$?

I mean it gets obliterated by used rx 570/580 4gb that cost the same, but i guess not everyone knows about dirt cheap polaris cards that perform similarly to a 1060

The 750ti isn’t an economical or practical choice, it’s a political statement

As mentioned the 3080 is probably the best all-round GPU, coming from a satisfied 3080 user. 6800XT is better if you need more vram for certain applications but for most cases the 3080 is better. Hardware Unboxed as usual has a pretty comprehensive video between the two:

yeah that was really the only thing that was holding me back on the rtx 3080 was the vram, have heard that a lot of games will be moving to needing more vram with consoles coming with so much now. Honestly I have no idea if it really will be an issue in the future, looking to get a card that will last me a long time. Would the 10gb be an issue down the road or is the vram issue overblown? And honestly don't care about ray tracing at all, will mostly likely never use it, and dlss maybe but honestly a big maybe. None of this is to say I am leaning to the rx 6800xt just want whatever one will be the best one for down the road. and i use a 3440x1440 monitor.

Your concerns about vram are warranted - Nvidia continues to undercut its own products with "enough memory for now but not for the future". I haven't run into any issues with video memory with my 10GB, warranted I am on 2560x1440 only. Interestingly however, the margin of victory for the 10GB 3080 actually increases over the 16GB 6800XT in the hardware unboxed video game average at 4K compared to 2K. I would say 10GB is still just enough for most games today at the $400 GPU pricepoint, considering the 3080 is still faster than the 6800XT at all resolutions I'd slightly lean towards team green in this case.

I’ve managed to use all 16gb on my A770 multiple times and I won’t buy any GPU in the future that doesn’t have excessive vram.

I replaced a 3070ti with the 16gb A770 because of this. I keep the 3070ti around just to remind me that buying an 8gb card in 2022 was a dumb idea and to never do that again.

That's fair. Nvidia definitely knows what they're doing with the vram situation - 12GB on a 4070ti, a card that costs $800USD, is unnaceptable for sure. I've been ok with 10GB and a 3080 but there are definitely situations where that wouldn't always be the case.

The 3080 has a very large bus width so it has a large bandwidth despite its limited vram amount.
