4k monitor: 28" or 32"?

Westingham

When I look around at some of the best rated 4k monitors (for example, on RTings or PCPartPicker), they're almost always 32" monitors. Very rarely do I see a 28" 4k monitor.

Is this because there aren't many 28" monitors made? Or there aren't many GOOD 28" monitors? I currently have a 27" 1080p monitor and I'm looking to upgrade; 28" seemed like a good size and 32" too big but now I'm wondering if I'm missing something somewhere.

Is it maybe the fact that 4k is better suited for 32" rather than 28"?

Any info/advice would be appreciated.

If you do some digging you might notice some monitors can be exactly the same accept for the screen size.

4K is better suited to 32" and above.  Arguably, 1440p is the 32" resolution.

Pixel density on a 28" 4K is indistinguishable from a 1440p 27". Waste of 4K.

Its because at 32 inches going from 1440p to 4K is a more noticable improvement than with 27.

27/28 inch 4K monitors are available just filter screen size on pcpartpicker.

I have a thing that with desktop displays, as I'm buying them for their desktop real-estate, having to use scaling above 100% is completely unacceptable. A 27-28" 4K at native 100% scaling makes UI items simply too small so 32" or larger is necessary.

If ALL you do is play games and you don't like having a large display, that size for 4K may be nice to make use of the extra sharpness but I'd never want it. I'm currently using a 42" 4K OLED and find its amazing.

personally i prefer 27inch for 4k, the ppi's definitely noticeable and usable if you seat close enough.

though the panel is more important and 32inch panels if you include the oled monitors might be better.

it's basically between the 27m2v and the gp27u atm (same panel), almost all of the 2024 4k monitors are 32inch or larger.

you can look up the basic specs of your choice here and see if the panel exists and if so if any manufacturers selling it

1440p 32"?

I highly disagree, at normal monitor distance that is. That pixel density is too low.

1440p is maximum 27" for me.

Personally I am running a 4K 32" and I like its size and resolution a lot, even higher resolution would still be noticeable tho but don't need more.

Even at 28" you can notice the difference between 1440p and 4k, without having to focus on it, but difference ofc is smaller. There is still a benefit, but less so than on 32".

Its actually more noticeable in desktop usage, word browser etc than in games, but also more noticeable in games than in movies.

If I personally had to choose:

32": 4k 60hz > 1440p 144hz

27/28": 1440p 144hz > 4k 60hz

If you can't have 4k with higher frequency.

But for OP:

Yes, at 4k, 32" is more common for people to buy, therefore there exist more of them. People getting 27" more often get 1440p monitors. But if you actually think 32" is too large for you, I wouldn't prioritize that because it's 4k over a 1440p 27".

If you want to use 100% scale, 28” screen is too small for it, even 32” also kind of small.

To me, 4K is better in around 32” to 42” and 42” is the best for 100% scale in 4K.

For 27” and below, it is best in 1440p resolution. I don’t accept 1440p in 32” as it is not looking good enough due to low pixel density. Also everything look too big on 100% scale.

For 24” and below, then go for 1080p. I also don’t accept 1080p in 27” as it is same not looking good enough due to same reason low pixel density. Same everything also look too big in 100% scale.

Well depends on you though I'd say a larger one based on your current. 1080p on 27" is very chunky so 4K on similar to you you will probably want to use scaling. Best would be to check them in person in store to get the idea.

Unfortunately Windows scaling is still not great overall, depends on programs too so always good to avoid. Personally 24" 1440p, 27" 4K in terms of sharpness is what I liked, but those monitors don't exist or few did on 4K side for reasons that high ppi Windows and programs are not supported well.
