Little upgrade: Ryzen 3600 to 5600X and moving parts

I am running a Ryzen 3600 that i want to pass on to my oldest kid (who is running a i5 7600) and his setup to the youngest. (who is in dire need of a faster CPU 😂)

Since i mostly play WoW, i'm looking for a good fit for that CPU wise (raiding). In the latest patch with addons i notice my 3600 is starting to dip below 60FPS

So good as any reason to upgrade 😄

Atm i have:

  • Aorus x570 motherboard
  • R5 3600
  • 2070 Super

My plan was to get a 5800X3D and a cheap B550 motherboard with 16GB for the 3600 to pass on. (would be just 120€)

But going over benchmarks i'm not seeing a good reason to dish out 150€ more for the 5800X3D. (5600X = 153€ vs 5800X3D = 332€)

With my 2070Super i think i will be GPU bound before CPU anyway with newer games?

Now for WoW: the only benchmark with these 2 i could find was a Gryphon run that does not really show raid conditions. Anyone here has experience with the 5600X or 5800X3D in WoW?

Depends on what's you're playing and resolution

Esports titles at 1080p are usually played low settings CPU bound and a 5800X3D will give more performance

But RPG style games at 1440p are played at highest setting possible and GPU bound, so CPU won't matter

atm the 5700X is pretty cheap, just got one for my son for 180EUR,  and you'll have 8 cores

System : AMD R9  7950X3D CPU/ Asus ROG STRIX X670E-E board/ 2x32GB G-Skill Trident Z Neo 6000CL30 RAM ASUS TUF Gaming AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX OC Edition GPU/ Phanteks P600S case /  Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 cooler (with 2xArctic P12 Max fans) /  2TB WD SN850 NVme + 2TB Crucial T500  NVme  + 4TB Toshiba X300 HDD / Corsair RM850x PSU

yep, for your use case the saved money on the cheaper Ryzen 5 is worth it.

B450 motherboards are still a great pairing with the 3600, if you can grab any of the MSI B450 MAX motherboards they are guaranteed compatible with the 3000 series CPUs

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

I'd grab a cheaper b450 to pair with the 3600.  Keep the x570 for you and your 5600, no real need for the 5800x3d if budget is an issue.

Isit worth getting an x570 for a 5600x even if you plan a heavy oc? genuine question i find them still too expensive

IMO no, unless you need some other feature found only on X570. The 5600X is a 65W CPU. It doesn't draw enough power to require the typically-better power delivery found on higher-end X570 boards (disclaimer regarding power delivery: there are good B550 boards, and there are trash X570 boards).

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

Chipset doesnt matter as long as you arent buying an a board since there are x470 and b450 boards that are better than some early x570 boards vrm wise

5600x isnt that power hungry so stick to a used ~50$ midranger b3/450 board

b550 and x570 are a very stupid buy nowadays, same goes for new am4 ryzens since used 5600(x) go for 80-100$, 5700x/5800x at 120-150$, and 5800x3d at ~200-250$

The 5700X is still an ok buy new. Over the holidays, it made it down to $170-ish on Amazon, and used ones on eBay were going for $150-ish. $20 for a manufacturer warranty? Yeah, I'm good with that.

Of course, as the annual post-holiday price split happens, with retailers bringing prices up and used prices falling, that will stop being the case quickly.

Not if buying now, but he has the x570 already so I would keep that instead of passing it down to the kid.

*looks at 12600k(f)

The manufacturer warranty is just to protect you incase you get a dud

Used cpus have been used for alot longer than the time period where your chip could be one very rare dud that up and dies randomly or is outright defective, >1 year used and im pretty sure you are safe from getting a dud

Also look on fb marketplace or any other classifieds sites for used stuff, ebay has very mid deals most of the time

The B450 are not as available as the B550 here, but i see more budget boards like A520 are.

Found an Asrock A520M-HDV for 56€ with the memory that would bring it down to 95€ (Both send back unused to store items, with their warranty intact)

So far watching the 5600X vs others in AM4 i see no real reason for me to upgrade higher, looks like its the sweetspot cost, power usage (crazy prices here) and upgrade wise.

That was always the plan yes, if only that i just swap out the CPU and wont have to touch my Windows install

Yep, you're all set if you just pop a 5600, 5600X, 5700X, etc on it.

The A520 will run a 3600 easily, so that's a fine pairing.
