HDR monitor suggestions

Am currently using a 31.5" 2560x1440p @ 165hz monitor with freesync (can't remember the specific model. It is an LED IPS panel I believe).

 

I'm not quite ready to buy a new monitor just yet, but at some point in the next year I just might, and when I do decide to get a new monitor I want one that has rock solid HDR support. My current model technically supports HDR, but I think it's HDR 400 or something along those lines, and overall is pretty average and nothing special.

 

Aside from good HDR support (which I'm guessing would require an OLED or something else along those lines), I'm torn on if I want to stick to 1440p or go with 4K. My current GPU is a 3080 ti, and my plan is to what until I upgrade my GPU (preferably with the next generation of AMD or Nvidia hardware), that being when I'd also want to upgrade my monitor. Whatever monitor I go with must have high refresh rate. Either 165hz if using a 1440p monitor, or 120+ if using a 4K monitor. Also it needs to be Freesync compatible, that way I'm not limited to just Nvidia hardware, and can choose between either one. Lastly when it comes to size, I've been using this 31.5" monitor for over a year now, so anything less I don't think I'd like. That said, I don't want a huge Monitor, so I'd say around 30" to 34" inches is what I'd prefer.

For 16:9 aspect ratio, it is easier to get 42” and above in OLED. For 32” in OLED, probably need to wait until mid of 2024 just can get.

 

As for 34” this size is for 21:9 aspect ratio and it is actually only screen size of 27” but longer.

If your not buying now, I'd make  post when your ready as there are likely a good amount of new options for oled and mini-led backlight lcd monitors in the future.

 

I have  3090(slightly fsater than a 3080ti) and game at 2160p 120fps without any real issues, so you cn probably go 2160p for the next monitor.

I just looked around a bit, and it does seem like the only OLEDs in the 30" range are ultrawides.

I've never used or seen an ultrawide in person, and was wondering if anyone here had any experiences with them in modern day time? Last I heard of them, not everything seemed to perform well with them.

Many using Ultrawide or Super Ultrawide. This you need to experience yourself, it is either you like it or dislike it.

 

i myself prefer Ultrawide and now using Super Ultrawide - Samsung Odyssey OLED G9.

 

For 32” OLED wide will be in 4K and will release some in year 2024. If you prefer 32” then you need to wait for it to release to purchase in market coming soon.

like @Andrewtstsaid u'd have to use uw urself to know whether you like it, if you want hdr on a budget then 1440p miniled atm is only 350usd, i think the cheapest oled on a sale is 700ish.

miniled has a slight color and brightness advantage over oled, and there's no burn-in risk, however small it may be for modern oled panels, but it does bloom around the mouse cursor and is weak in gray. The color difference is noticeable side by side by that's about it.

 

Oled has better contrast and has better response time overall and is better for fps

 

I'm biased toward 16:9 and mini-led and this is my recommendation.

 

movies/streaming: oled

single player games: mini-led

fps games/competitive games: oled

anything to do with work/color/art: mini-led

That does look like a very appealing monitor. For panel type it says it's a HVA panel, and I was wondering how that compares to IPS panels? Are they about the same, better, or worse.

it's one of the newer VA panels that has higher contrast and color coverage, some people do notice the smearing though

 

contrast does matter even for miniled as the tech is weak in the lighter colors, gray, teal, light green etc, basically any color thats not dark enough to trigger the dimming zones

 

the ips version is 500 on sale but that's closer to oled territory

New VA panel is very fast respond time, minimal or basically no black smearing issue.

 

But I still don’t encourage you get mini-LED in VA. The blooming at mouse cursor is irritating when local dimming is on when using for productivity purposes. As usual it still got dirty screen issues in VA, also as usual poor viewing angle, it not impact much as we use it straight looking into it, but it is an issue if you plan sharing screen with people.

 

I own Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 as well Neo G8 which using new type of VA. I selling both after few months usage and go for OLED screen instead.

 

In short summary I won’t pick any Mini-LED in VA anymore.
