Laptop for AI assisted image generation

dizmo

I'm going to tinker with some AI image generation, and I was wondering what older laptop would be best for this?
What should I be aiming for? More RAM? Fastest CPU? Some kind of high powered GPU?

I'd probably try and get one of the non -U processors, 64GB of RAM, and a faster SSD since the latter 2 are quite cheap.

Might actually be viable, and more cheaper to just go with a Chromebook Plus with the AI features they've been rolling out.

I haven't looked too far into it but I don't believe the applications are web based.

Ah, that wouldn't help much then. Unless they possibly have Linux/Android versions you can install.

That said, there are lots of web based AI image generation websites out there, so really depends on what you want to do.

An nvidia GPU would do you great, preferably 2000 series or newer, and with 8gb of vram or more.

Does it really need to be a laptop?

Is there specific models you want to use?

Typically you want a fast GPU with lots of vram for most of them. Something like a 4090 mobile would be the best option.

Hate to be that guy but really, there's so many online tools to do that now (Bing being the best IMO) do you really need a whole computer for natively running AI?

Stable Diffusion runs acceptably on a 3060, 32GB RAM. If you insist on buying hardware I'd shoot for around that mark. Sure, you could go way over the top with some ridiculous 4090 mobile hardware but you really don't need to if you simply wish to "tinker".

Likely better control to be able to fine-tune what the model is doing. A majority of the tools only give you a textbox and not much else. With running your own model, you can probably fine-tune it to better match your specific art style. Then like most AI image and video upscalers, accounts are required so now you get into the argument of privacy, data collection, maybe even copyright (like who owns the image?) so on so forth.

Then some of us just like to tinker. Does one really need 10 computers in the house? No. But a bunch of us on this forum do.
