How many monitors could a computer support?

I'm just very curious, I understand that a single GPU like GTX 6/7xx or R9 can support 4 monitors. But lets say I have unlimited Graphics cards and monitors, basicly Bill Gates. Would there be a theoretical limit to the amount of monitors a computer can support? or would it just cap at say 10 monitors or something?

Doesn't Matrox make cards that support a huge amount of displays on their own? To make e.g. a video wall? Something like 30 displys, I think. (DONT QUOTE ME ON THAT NUMBER)

I have seen some multi panel displays at some EXPOs, which consist or like 50 42" tvs in a collage setup, while all acting as a single display. I'm guessing you need some special piece of hardware to run 50 displays at a time, because there is no way you can fit that many connectors on a PC.

You may have an unlimited amount of graphic cards, but what about PCI slots ;D

Im pretty sure the limit for GPUs is 8 with the currnet drivers.

also, 64 bit machines will 'only' be able to address 2^64 bits of memory.

Well a motherboard with 4 PCI express slots, plus 4 amd fire pro w9000's which has 6 mini display ports, equals support for 24 monitors. I'm sure there's a more exotic way to get more, but that's a (relatively) more conventional way to do it. All of those are available to buy on newegg. It's not cheap, nor practical in the slightest, but you can do it.

SR-2 (7 PCI-e slots)

various AMD cards with 6 mini display ports

display port splitters 3 per display port

126 theoretical monitors I suppose.  Not sure if the OS would allow it though.
