Grinding noise on startup, hp probook 640, with broken screen.

Go to solution Solved by da na,

What did you do to that poor thing?

Seems the HDD is dead too.

On old Dell systems there's a button on the keyboard to switch the BIOS to the external screen... doesn't look like there is one here. However, if you unplug the internal display (which isn't doing much good as-is) there's a good chance it will switch over to the HDMI/DP output for the BIOS.

Hello!
i’ve had an hp probook 640 for about 10 years now, around 6-8 months ago i broke its screen and left it. Now i need it for university, i bought an adapter (display-port/HDMI), it turns on but it does not display on my tv, plus its making a grinding sound on start-up, not for just a few seconds, as long as it’s on its making a grinding sound.

my questions are,

1-How do i get it to display on my TV? Because i can’t see a thing.

2-should i be worried about the sound?

Please, please help. Thank you in advance.

Its the harddrive that is clicking, there is no way of saving that usually. IMO you messed that laptop good, start looking to replacements.

Yeah that HDD is borked.

If you critically need anything stored on it still you could talk to a professional data recovery service. But it's time for a new laptop. Laptops with HDD's really shouldn't be used in 2023 in general.

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

I think you're assumption of just breaking the screen is a bit off.

Sorry, but it sounds like you jacked the HDD up as well.
