z87 vs z97

Go to solution Solved by TheNinjaNextDor,

So its just sata express no other improvements?

Kind of, there's one more thing that I'm missing, but it's not a huge thing. I think Thunderbolt support.

I want to know if i should go with the z97 or z87 motherboards and is the new haswell refresh worth it?

devils canyon might be worth the wait, but no one knows

z97 is a bit more future proof, with official support for fifth gen core series.

Go with a Devil's Canyon cpu as they are unlocked (4790K/4690K) if you do get Z97.

It's not worth it to get a Z97 board if you plan on getting a Haswell (not refresh or DC) cpu. If you do plan on getting Broadwell later on then you'll want a Z97 board.

Case: Corsair 4000D Airflow; Motherboard: MSI ZZ490 Gaming Edge; CPU: i7 10700K @ 5.1GHz; Cooler: Noctua NHD15S Chromax; RAM: Corsair LPX DDR4 32GB 3200MHz; Graphics Card: Asus RTX 3080 TUF; Power: EVGA SuperNova 750G2; Storage: 2 x Seagate Barracuda 1TB; Crucial M500 240GB & MX100 512GB; Keyboard: Logitech G710+; Mouse: Logitech G502; Headphones / Amp: HiFiMan Sundara Mayflower Objective 2; Monitor: Asus VG27AQ

Then z87 is better cuz there is no support for thunderbolt yet i will wait till skylake

Any difference between the Z87 Gryphon and Z97 Gryphon? I noticed that the VRMs on the Z97 have a diamond, shiny pattern while the old VRMs are a dull matte gray. Other than that I don't see a difference...plus the Z87 is only $10 cheaper? Is the Z97 worth it?

If the Z87 Gryphon can take the i5-4590 without any problems then I'm all for it.

ALso does anyone know if Intel plans on making a new chipset for Broadwell? I'm hoping that Z97 stays because that would pretty much break tick-tock and would piss off everyone who bought Z97 for the "5th Gen Core compatibility"

Z97 boards will be compatible with Broadwell. As for Skylake? who knows. Not sure if anyone knows really...

A Z87 board will handle the 4590 with ease.

given intels recent track record i would say we will see a new chipset launch with broadwell.

The whole point of Haswell refresh is to hold us over until Broadwell arrives.
