SFF Build with Full sized graphics card

Budget (including currency): $200 for PSU, Case, gpu

Country: USA

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Minecraft, gta, dark souls 3, Elden ring

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): So I got a computer gifted to me for free. It is an HP ElieteDesk 800 g4 Small form factor. I have 16 gb of ram installed, ssd, i5 8500.

 

I'm going to buy a graphics card for it. I would put a half height gpu in there, but that's not very performant compared to used full sized GPUs you can find on ebay.

 

Long story short, I would like to get a gpu, power supply and potentially a case to put all of this in.

 

I have a few concerns, though:

  • Can I replace the power supply and just plug everything into the motherboard? Does the motherboard use non standard psu connectors for example.
  • How do I know that the motherboard is going to fit in a full size pc case? probably non standard screw layout, not sure the best way to check though.
  • Since any decent used GPU is going to require a different PSU, could I use the existing case with the side off of it and just connect a second power supply to the gpu and run it from the second psu? Would I have to jump that second psu every time I wanted to start up the PC? This scenario would assume that the motherboard connectors are non-standard and forces me to use 2 separate PSUs to start the computer.

I suppose I could buy a used motherboard to work around this issue too and just keep that cpu, ram and storage. Trying to avoid spending too much on this though.

So, as far as I know, this will be a none standard case and motherboard. So you are going to struggle to recase it and the PSU is proprietary with none standard connectors meaning you cant use an off the shelf PSU to power the motherboard with major modification. 

 

Your best bet is probably to build some kind of eGPU type box that uses a PCIe riser and powers the card separately with it's own PSU

Don't bother. The mobo is proprietary and, IIRC, the front panel ports are part of the board. The board is also a nonstandard form factor and won't fit in any other cases. The PSU is nonstandard and you can't replace it with anything but the same model (or an identically-sized HP one). If you're sold on using this PC, your best bet is an RTX A2000 GPU, which is basically a half-height, low-profile RTX 3050 in terms of power.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

From what I can see from the pictures, the motherboard uses both a non-standard form factor and non-standard power connectors. so, it would not fit in a standard case without modifications or be powered by a standard power supply. Regarding leaving the side panel open and and hanging the full size gpu out and powering it with a second powersupply and jumping the pins, while jank, it will work. You do need a way of supporting that much larger gpu though, as you can no longer screw it into the case

It's easier and cheaper just to find used stuff on eBay. Motherboards are ridiculously cheap, as are most other components you'd need to complete the build.

Yeah, perhaps that would be the best course of action. As it sits right now, I've got ram, storage, cpu. I'll do some digging and see what I can find.
