comcast exec talks data caps

Wendriel

http://gizmodo.com/comcast-reckons-all-its-users-will-be-data-capped-in-5-1576743572

Looks like one of the big cable companies is already pointedly on track to data cap its customers.  They already cap areas in five states at 300 GB a month.  I know it sounds like a lot to the non pc/tech enthusiast, but my family of ordinary users, has to come close if we do not already exceed 300 gigs a month.  I torrent, it is a bad habit but everyone does it, but my family also uploads everything to the cloud.  I use my 4tb WD mycloud to back up everything and serve as my media storage that I then access every day remotely, whether for streaming movies/music or pulling up files.  My sister backs up art projects and photos to the cloud.  I also download games, patches and dlc to use when I am off/ have the time.

The article said the cap might be risen to 500 GB but if it means more money, I feel like Comcast will keep the cap where it is and charge the proposed $50 per 10 GB of overage data.

As a previous Comcast customer, and current Verizon customer, this will not affect me right away.  That said, if this precedent becomes reality, then other service providers are sure to follow.  When it comes down to it, each of their goals is to maximize profit in new and innovative ways.  Unfortunately sometimes that just means the consumer has an arbitrary number assigned for their data cap.

I torrent, it is a bad habit but everyone does it...

Why would you admit to torrenting? Its considered stealing and people have been tried and convicted for it. Would you walking into a police station and announce that you just stole from someone? Also, not everybody torrents and its probably not a defense that would hold up in court if your careless statements got you into some trouble. Posting confessions in a public forum or on a public site are legally obtainable by law enforcement and dont require a warrant. Some people had to learn that the hard way, so be careful what you post.

Does he live at a Dorm or like? Like student flats or like? Because some dorms have capped internet, but I have yet to see a non-dorm internet having a cap on the limits.

Come to Canada and you'll cry. Normal plans are below 100Gb. Mine is 80$ per month and I got 250GB... If I want unlimited, I need to pay 10$. And that's a pretty new option. Before that you just couldn't have unlimited and had to pay if you busted.

Wow its just me and my mum and we can easily go over 500gbs if we want but that is our cap and in australia basically everything is capped theres like 2 companies that offer unlimted also we dont back up anything to the cloud coz our upload is terrible but we would need way more than 300gb if we could upload for america this is bad there going completely backwards.

As a cox communications customer I am fairly happy with my 150 down 50 up connection for $99 a month. I have a 500 gb data cap, but I hit like 700 a month on average and there's no overage fees or throttling.

Canada has had these for a awhile now. Hell, some of my friends CURRENTLY have a 40gb cap, and up until about a month ago, I had a cap of 120gb. Currently paying 100$ a month for 60down 15 up and that's as fast as it can get where I live.

Torrenting =\= pirating. The most common way os pirating is torrenting, but torrenting is not pirating. Torrenting is a method of large file transfers

I stand corrected. The way he said it sounded like he meant pirating through torrenting, but you guys are correct. It doesnt mean he was actually pirating.

Enter Australia, where caps <100gb are expensive if you want decent speeds that aren't dial up equivalent (my up on cable is 56KBps)
