Are there any scanners that let you scan with the lamp turned off?

I am currently working on a project to create a large-format camera that uses a scanner as the sensor, however, I've hit a roadblock. I thought that I'd seen some scanners previously that had the ability to scan without their lamps turned on, but I am struggling to find any that support this feature. Does anybody know a scanner that either has this feature or one that could be hacked / DIY to disable the lamp and still operate? I got a cheap cannon scanner to try and use, however, it seems to have some auto-homing feature that uses the lamp to tell when it is home, so when it's disabled it no longer functions at all. Any suggestions would be much appreciated, thank you!
