Anything better than Windows Defender?

The native antivirus does the job but is full of shtty bugs that never get patched. My mom who knows jacksht about computers keeps whining about the "take action" button not working, even though Defender automatically isolates files with detected assets. She's also skeptical about using virustotal because she even takes a single positive as a definitive positive.

 

Is there something that is as reliable, free to use and with a bug-free interface made for tech-illiterate millennials?

Malwarebytes is the only thing that comes to mind as far as free security software goes. That said, the free version doesn't have realtime protection, with you having to manually have it scan the system whenever you want.

 

As far as paid software goes, I got rid of Defender and have been using Kaspersky on my machines for awhile now, and I really like it. It's definitely a hell of a lot better than Defender. I paid around $30 for one year subscription.

I work for a cybersecurity company and we offer 2 antivirus solutions. One is Huntress (Ransomware protection) + Windows defender, one is (I dont remember the name) + Malwarebytes.

 

From what I understand Defender has gotten quite good over the last few years.

Windows Defender paired with Malwarebytes is all you need. Been using Malwarebytes at my shop for several years now and it's the best there is. 

 

Free version requires manual scanning, and the premium version is 24/7 real time protection.

You have to pay for Malwarebytes for realtime scanning.  One license covers 3 machines though.

The only free antivirus I recommend is Sophos Home. It's unobtrusive and doesn't completely bog the PC down, but I haven't kept up on how effective it is compared to Windows Defender.

I actually pay for MalwareBytes.  While the free version is damn good, I am paying to reward the company for making such a great product.

 

Do you need to pay?  No.
