upgraded to a new Radeon RX 6700 (non-xt) graphics card but gaming experience got worse

So I finally got a GPU for my potato PC expecting a substantial increase in FPS and smoother experience at higher resolutions. Got a new 650W Thermaltake RGB PSU to support the card as my older one was just 500W.

Once I installed the drivers, did all the basic stuff, and expected to have fun, my gaming experience got worse. There's screen tearing and continues frame drops. I used to get an average of 55 FPS in Valorant at 1600*900 res but now it shows 200 FPS but the frame drops are awful and the experience is a lot worse than like playing at 40 FPS. So the game shows frames but it's like they're all disappearing somewhere. I can run games at higher res but the frame drops are just AWFUL!!

Sorry if the description is a bit messy but this is how I'm able to explain what's happening! I've tried some general fixes but none seem to work. Please help me solve this issue.

PC Specs:

  • CPU - AMD Ryzen 5 2400G
  • RAM - Corsair Vengeance 16 GB *1
  • GPU - Ryzen RX 6700 10 GB (non-XT)
  • Motherboard - B450 AORUS PRO
  • SSD - Crucial BX500 120 GB
  • HDD - Western Digital 1TB
  • PSU - Thermaltake Lite Power RGB 650W
  • Monitor - BenQ GW 2270H (Later got a newer version of this under warranty and can't remember the actual name)

You're running that cpu in single channel mode (with only one stick of ram) - that's the culprit I believe

I'm suspecting your CPU is fully overwhelmed that's why you got stutters/frame drops, try to limit FPS to say 90 and check if it goes better

Else upgrade it 😛

EDIT thanks  @thekingofmonksdidn't spot that (who get 1x16GB RAM stick, seriously ?? 😮 ), that makes things even worse indeed

Yep you're very right! My CPU is holding on to dear life. And about the RAM, I kinda overlooked the specification when I was buying and now I suffer.

I've a question though - why is it that after buying a GPU that all these issues are exaggerated? Is it a result of bottlenecking? And is my only solution spending more money to upgrade more PC parts? ;_;

5500,5600 are your best bet for budget upragde paths. dual channel ram would be nice but the cpu is struggling.

Is upgrading my pc the only solution? Cuz I'm broke af right now

Also forgot to mention that I did indeed lock my frames at like 60, 80, 120 FPS but in all cases, my PC was somehow struggling awfully to stay on the locked FPS despite the fact that it's giving like 200+ FPS peak when uncapped!

So you could try what others said locking the frame rate to 60/80whatever so the cpu isnt wasting energy on all the frames you "dnt need", then i would try oc the cpu abit see if it help if not go for a cheap dual channel ram $20-40 bucks then and only then would be the time to spend extra on cpu 5600 non x will serve you for years but by then maybe you will have saved some if you need it.

As others have mentioned, that single-channel RAM configuration is killing your already-weak CPU. The 2400G is, despite its series numbering, based on the original Zen CPU architecture. You should save up your Rupees for another stick of RAM and, if you can stretch your budget further, get a newer CPU. I'd recommend a 5600(non-x). However, the dual-channel RAM should be your first step. That alone should make a noticeable improvement.

I have a 5700(non-xt) and play at 1440p @ 150hz on most games (medium-ish settings). Your 6700 is considerably stronger, and that, coupled with only having a 1080p monitor, means your GPU is most definitely NOT the issue here.

Well at 40fps you didn't notice drops to 30 as it was always awful 😞

From 200 to 50 is way more noticeable...

Your setup is very unbalanced and this gives a worse experience that an uniformly bad setup☺️
