Prj2 'Downtown' - [COMPLETED]

ToddK

Quick update.  Finished up covering the roof section.  The external mockup is pretty much done.  There's a couple of areas I'm not quite happy with the look of yet, but I think that's stuff I can handle at the end when I'm securing the facade to the outside of the case.  Next weekend I think I'm ready to tear it all apart and start painting the case itself.

I really like it! you should cover other things like a NAS or an external hard drive and make a little town on your desk xD This sure is one of the most original builds I have seen in a while.

Much thanks!  She's all torn down right now.  I still have to finish up the final cable routing.  I'll be putting the HDD/power lights on top like Aircraft Warning Beacons.  I also have to cut the USB slots on top and place the power button.  Then I have to tear it apart and paint, paint, paint.  After that she'll come all back together for final photography.

Thanks for taking the time to look through it!

Slower weekend this week.  I have some parts coming which is delaying me from painting.  In the meantime:

Mounted the front LEDs.

121_leds_mounted_by_tkrep-d7ivzxg.jpg

Replaced the red & green LEDs on the HDD/Power lights with white LEDs.

118_white_light_by_tkrep-d7ir0fs.jpg

To use as Aircraft Warning Lights on the top of the highrise.

Have some water cooling components on the way, so we'll see what I can do about re-jigging the internal mounting next week.

Getting started on a weekend of modding.

The outer that I've built uses a vinyl material I picked up at the local hardware store.  The nice thing is it allows for simple box cutter carving.  To keep the look of the mod clean I'm embedding the power/reset switches in the framework under the external foam.

126_carving_by_tkrep-d7jjq8u.jpg

Cut the block out and a lane for the wiring to run through.

127_cutting_by_tkrep-d7jjq93.jpg

Test fit the new switches in place.

129_fitting_by_tkrep-d7jjq9g.jpg

Got the new switches all wired up.

133_shrunked_by_tkrep-d7jjru6.jpg

And the new switches are ready to go.

130_good_to_go_by_tkrep-d7jjq8k.jpg

And one last easter egg, this little beauty arrived in the mail.  There's a new mouse in the house.

134_new_mouse_by_tkrep-d7jjuxt.jpg

Ready to drill some rivets and start some sanding & painting.

Nice!

Do you have plans on painting the mouse?

If I missed it, tell me plz.

No plans to paint the mouse.  The build is all white externally.  The mouse should fit right in.  Hopefully it won't look to big.

That mouse.. Love this build :)

lol - Thanks!

The mouse is actually pretty light & comfortable, so it should work out fine.  Thanks!  It's been a fun project.

I have that same mouse only in black and it is really annoying to use, and this is the reason I used it only as a replacement for my Logitech wireless mouse when the batteries were dead, really bad ergonomics and DPI, I have it laying in a box downstairs waiting to be used lel.My current mouse is an E-Blue Mazer Type R wireless2500DPI

It's not a bug, it's an undocumented feature!

Not too bad a job considering my noobicity.

Next step:  take a fleet of industrial colors and paint up the insides like an old factory / boiler room.

A quick sneak peek at some of the base color for the 'old factory / boiler room' look for the inside of the case. Will be working on distressing the paint this week. We'll see how she goes.

Was out of town for a few days, but made a bit of progress this weekend.  Got the external white painting all completed.

156_reassembled_by_tkrep-d7kody2.jpg

Now has a nice bronze/metal industrial look inside.

157_industrial_inside_by_tkrep-d7kody7.j

With a nice clean white outside to match the architectural model look.

158_clean_outside_by_tkrep-d7kodyb.jpg

And a shot with the cable management in place.  Will still need to do some weathering on the pipes, but I may just install it all first to see how it looks before deciding.

Still need to do some touch ups on the paint and get the acrylic doors & balcony frame installed.

Small update, just a quick before & after shot of the paint.  Really pretty happy with it.

163_before__after_by_tkrep-d7kzdax.jpg

This weekend should see the side panels re-assembled with an attempt to finalize the crafter's foam & such on the outside.  Getting close to having this one ready to go.  :)

Getting a little work done during the week since I have a few things on the list to do this weekend. Lining up the side panels to attach them back to the frame.

164_lining_up_by_tkrep-d7l6qvm.jpg

Drilled out some holes in the acrylic.

165_drilling_holes_by_tkrep-d7l6qvs.jpg

Originally was going to try and work out some screws, but with the acrylic being so thin I wasn't sure it would work. Brainstorm: rivets!

166_rivet_it__just_a_little_bit_by_tkrep

Fingers crossed they wouldn't crack the acrylic. Fortunately they did not.

167_whew__worked_by_tkrep-d7l6qw0.jpg

Got them screwed down to the frame. Probably will replace the dark screws with some silver ones.

168_screwed_in_place_by_tkrep-d7l6qw5.jp

And voila! One hinged window/door.

Wow, rivets in acrylic... brave man. :D

I would probably have put washers or even a metal plate between the

rivet heads and the acrylic for peace of mind, but hey, if it works,

it works.
