Should I upgrade or build a new system?

Budget (including currency): 2000-3000€ (depends what sensible)

Country: Austria

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: pretty much only Gaming, everything from Indie Games to Modern AAA-Games

Other details

My current system:

CPU - Ryzen 7 3700x
GPU - MSI Gaming X Trio RTX 2080 super

Cooler - Corsair H100 AIO (dont remember the full name)
RAM - 32GB Gskill Trydent Z 3200Mhz
Mobo - Gigabyte B550 Elite V2 (used to have a ASUS TUF X570 that Broke a couple weeks ago)
PSU - Bequiet Pure Power 750W
Storage - 1TB Samsung 970 Evo SSD + 2TB HDD

Hi, im looking for input on wether to upgrade my current system or to completely build a new one. My current PC has had some problems for a bit now (doesnt wanna boot/turn-on for no reason) and I am wondering if its time to change some things. The system is still doing good but somewhat starting to show its age.

Im gaming at 1440p 144hz on my primary monitor and have a second monitor thats 4k. I wanted at the time a pc that allowed me to play both on high frame rates and high graphics settings, now some three years later i more or less have to choose one or the other depending on the game im playing. Im open to upgrading my current setup or building a new one.

The obvious CPU upgrade would be a Ryzen 5800x3d, but with AM4 not getting any new releases and DDR5 a Ryzen 7000 CPU or maybe even Intel CPU could also make sense.

For GPU its a bit harder. Prices here are all over the place for example:

RTX 3080: 900€

RTX 3080ti: 1300-1500€

RTX 4070ti: 900-1000€

RTX 4080: 1300-1500€

Radeon 7900 XT: 900-1100€

Radeon 7900XTX: 1100-1350€

Im open to any suggestions that you may have. If there are any questions or if anything is unclear please ask.

Thank you very much for your help.

I'd start with upgrading the CPU to a 5800X3D

Keep board and RAM

Add a good NVMe SSD (1 or 2TB), Gen4 (use CPU slot)

Then add the best GPU you can, 7900XTX or 4080

Total cost around 1800€

Good luck cooling it with just that, id suggest waiting for 7800X3D instead as OP just play games, and spend the extra cash on bigger case and maybe an oversized Sabrent 4TB nvme drive (even though im a massive QLC hater). And OP can go even lower if its just a 1440p/4K game to compress cost with something like R5 7600 or 7700.

So would you say its better to build a new system?

A 7900x3d seems a bit overkill or not? Also can i reuse my Cooler with the new AM% platform or do i have to buy a new one?

Yeah a 7900x3d also seems a bit overkill to me. Im thinking of going the 5800x3d + 4080 route to keep cost low, also i think i need a new psu too since i got this weird problem that i cant pinpoint.

What do you say, upgrade or build a new system?

For CPU wise i do think that 5800X3D package would be a very good one as your board is going to be competent enough to run it. But of course the standard caveat of 1440p and 4K low CPU usage in games apply, if you want the most performance on most games that arent CPU bound like CSGO, Cities Skylines, Factorio, and games of similar genres and optimization, then a 5600X or 5700X with an overbudget for 4090 (or a pretty well built custom board RX 7900XTX) would be the option id go to. 850W PSU upgrade would also be advisable but not necessary as current gen GPUs are not as hard in transient power as 6000 series AMD and 3000 series nvidia.

I suggest you open a request for help in the troubleshooting sub-forum before you shop, so that whatever is causing the issue doesn't mess up new parts.

Also, a lot of people say the 4070 Ti isn't worth it.

I've been using computers since around 1978, started learning programming in 1980 on Apple IIs, started learning about hardware in 1990, ran a BBS from 1990-95, built my first Windows PC around 2000, taught myself malware removal starting in 2005 (also learned on Bleeping Computer), learned web dev starting in 2017, and I think I can fill a thimble with all that knowledge. 😉 I'm not an expert, which is why I keep investigating the answers that others give to try and improve my knowledge, so feel free to double-check the advice I give.

My phone's auto-correct is named Otto Rong.🤪😂

I think a 4090 would really be overkill since i only game at 1440p anyway. A 4080 or 7900XTX should be more then enough, from a money standpoint too.

Yeah im about to write a new post for the troubleshooting tho im pretty sure its the PSU.

Also yeah, the 4070ti really isnt something im interested in. For what it costs it doesnt do a good enough job.

I would say to build a new PC. Your old cooler will probably work and just  put the AIO in the top of the case, so I will fix the Part list and list it below.

https://at.pcpartpicker.com/list/qGZVVw

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D 3.4 GHz 8-Core Processor  (€353.90 @ Alza)
CPU Cooler: Corsair iCUE H100x RGB ELITE 47.73 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler  (Purchased For €0.00)
Motherboard: Gigabyte X570S AORUS ELITE AX ATX AM4 Motherboard  (€264.90 @ Alza)
Memory: G.Skill Trident Z Neo 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3600 CL16 Memory  (€137.90 @ Alza)
Storage: Samsung 970 Evo 1 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 3.0 X4 NVME Solid State Drive  (Purchased For $0.00)
Storage: Crucial P5 Plus 2 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 X4 NVME Solid State Drive  (€164.90 @ Alza)
Video Card: Gigabyte GAMING OC GeForce RTX 4080 16 GB Video Card  (€1419.00 @ Alza)
Case: Fractal Design Focus 2 RGB ATX Mid Tower Case  (€93.90 @ Alza)
Power Supply: Asus ROG-STRIX-850G 850 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply  (€171.90 @ Alza)
Case Fan: Fractal Design Aspect 12 RGB PWM 56 CFM 120 mm Fan  (€22.90 @ Alza)
Total: €2629.30
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

Well then i could also just reuse my RAM, Mobo, Case and PSU (tho I think I have to replace it) since we are sticking with the AM4 platform

people cool the 7950x/3d with duel towers all the time

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

The X3D is extremely new, so "all the time" is an unqualifiable statement.

Fair point but the 7950x which is harder to cool can be cooled with a duel tower easily
